Since the goal is a Spec E30, considering reasonable mileage (less than 180k) cars with an auto will open up your choices and reduce the initial costs. Swapping in a 5-speed isn't that expensive (especially if you can do the work yourself). And you can be pretty sure that a car with an auto has spent little time in the higher end of the rpm range.
