For me, It'll be a royal PITA to accomplis since this car needs to retain it's interior. So for me going through the effort of pulling all that down, and then reinstalling it would be worth the effort to go ahead with taking as much weight as possible out in one shot....
Actual weight of sunroof and cassette?

The double skin sunroof is heavy. It's heavy enough that if you remove your sunroof cassette and motor, yet leave the 2ply sunroof, you'd done a lot of work for limited gain. If you go the next step and replace the entire sunroof with a sheet of steel, or remove a layer of sunroof, you will get probably 40% more weight loss for 15% more effort.
Of course I pulled those numbers out of my butt. My point is that after I removed the cassette, I hefted the 2ply sunroof and was immediately struck by the thought...I didn't go to all that damn work just to put this heavy beast back in place.www.Gress.org

Yes the sliding portion is 2 ply and can be separated. Poke around the SpecE30 forums and you'll see some posts from guys that have done this.
Separating the layers of sunroof and then reinstalling the outer layer is an elegant solution. But it is still easier to cut out a piece of sheetmetal and rivet it on top.....the more common solution.www.Gress.org
