I believe I read that Vorshlag recently purchased the correct size tap to cut and re-thread strut housings rather than cut and re-weld. You would still need a perch welded but that is cake! Might shoot them an email.

Fair & Hanchey have been buying up a bunch of local e30 non-M strut housing to convert for their AST-4300 coil-over kits .
I actually have two loose sets that I was going to send their way but I'm holding off till i can swing their place and am ready to buy/barter for some goodies . :)

Yes, but judging from his other threads he is building an autox car, which means shortened housings are not entirely necessary. My car will bottom out on the oil pan before the struts will bottom out on the spring perches.
Actually you would have to bottom out the strut WAY before the oil pan. Meaning bottom the top of the shock onto the bumpstops....sigpic

Yes you would want to hit the bump stops before smashing your oil pan, I was simply stating that limited shock travel isn't as big of a deal as most people make it out to be unless you want to lower your car a silly amount (which I again assumed you would not for autox). At my current ride height ~12" from center of wheel to fender lip, I have 2.75" oil pan clearance and 3.5" shock travel before the gland nut would come into contact with the lowest part of the upper perch (vorshlag plates, 6" spring) The most suspension travel I've noted on street/roadcourse/autox was 2". This doesn't leave a ton of room for a bump stop, but my car is too low and should be raised at least 1" or so for better suspension geometry.
Just trying to save you a little money since it may find it is not necessary, it's much easier to remove material than it is to add in more. You also wouldn't be limited to only short bodied struts.
