    SM Results

Since there have been several threads about SM E30s and how well they would fair, i feel the need to post about this past weekends GASS event for OVR.

It was a two day event that included 4 E30s [1 DSP, 3 SM] FTD from the weekend was set by last years SM national champ car, correct me if im wrong, piloted by Andy Lieber. Correction, fastest full bodied car. FTD was a BM 1976 LeGrand Mk18 with 85.373.

The '06 Evo IX seen below:

I can speak for myself when it comes to mods, but the other guys on here that have autocross e30s can fill in the blanks.

'91 318is ~55k on the engine, full interior
H&R Race, Bil Sports, 21mm front bar attached to strut, 19mm ST rear bar, Sparco front bar, 3.73 LS, SS brake lines, Hawk HP4+ pads, stock rotors, Jim C chip, M20 flywheel/clutch, offset CAB, vorslag camber plates [~3.2 negative], 225/50-14 A3S05's on stock baskets with a full season of runs.

    Jusin [gazellebeigem3] - '91 318is S50 swap
Couldnt tell ya all he has done, but he was not on ideal r compounds for the event.

And of course Garrick Forkenbrock with a million things done to his car.

    Times from the weekend:

    Andy Lieber [78SM] - Day 1: 45.334 [had 45.153 +1]
    - Day 2: 43.729

    Garrick Forkenbrock [72DSP] - Day 1: 48.083
    - Day 2: 47.398 [had 47.022 +1]

    Joseph Panico [31SM] - Day 1: 48.669
    - Day 2: 47.802 [had a 47.384 +1]

    Justin Nokes [169SM] - Day 1: 49.827
    - Day 2: 48.441

Times dont lie. That is not very far off IMO, so it could be done with the right power. Say combine Justins engine with Garricks suspension/brakes/tires and you would have a good shot at a fast SM car.

**Garrick, Justin: if you dont want your times up here let me know, ill take 'em down**

Yep, EVO/STI is hard to beat in SM with a good driver. I understand making an e30 FAST in SM is a challenge, one would probably be better off with e36 (better suspension geometry (rear), and ability to fit WIDE tires easier) but there is something about an e30 we all love LOL

Last year in Peru I got 3rd against that car (it got 1 - 2 with Lieber as 1st place). Was beat by 2.758 from 1st, and 1.778 from 2nd (combinded from both days). If I was about to get Garrick to drive would have been less, but still don't know if it would have been possible to make up the gap. They really have a lot of money into that car, plus like it or not it is a much better base to build off of. Oh and another thing that we really get killed by is the AWD launch, compared to an E30 even on big rubber its a good 1/4 second+ advantage if not more. Peru happened to having timing lights start after a 100ft + corner which really helped even that out.

Aaron's STI an my old Turbo E30 ran pretty close and he still got beat out by 3.2 seconds this weekend.
Still I'm always impressed how well Joe's car (and more so his driving) gets that little 318is moving. Being able to nearly match Garrick's times with a whole lot less grip and power is impressive in itself.

Justin's car had some really aweful brakes, and that throttle needed adjusted so you could actually modulate it with some accuracy.

I beat up on STX cars, we'll leave it at that. Forgetting how to drive is a bitch.

:( I done fixed that shit. The worst was the subframe mounts, they were completely collapsed.

:p Yeah those tend to not last so long once you throw any power at them.
Still I was trying to give you an excuse why you didn't beat a puny 318is....

Well in that case.... there is a list of other parts that essentially make my car a jalopy, so thats why my mighty car was taken down.

I'm gonna have to take you up one of these days. But got my hands full with the LeMons car. Its riding on 550# up front, and 700# on the back. About stock ride height if not a tad higher :) Have 2 events the next two weekends up here in Cleveland so still getting my fix in. I'll have to make it down one of these days so Ben can finally drive this POS. We plan on taking it to MidOhio 8/8/08 on the Cinci PDX day.
