About to order some dot-r tires

About to order some tires for my white e30. I was looking at 16s, but I think 225/50 r15 are a good choice/fit w/o having to chop the fenders?

This is for an SM car, so wheels wise I can go with 15x8 if there is an advantage over 7.5

I am looking at Rota Slipstream 15x7.5 et20 57.1 hub to mount these on and leaning towards either V710s or R1s. I have driven cars on both and they would easily last a season and I am afraid that the R6s would barely last a full season? Any input on the A048s?

    Thanks

R6 isn't the compound for a AX car. V710 all the way. The R1 is also a Road-race tire like the R6. The A048 is a step down from the rest IMO.

The 8" wheel should give you more sharpness, but being a 225, it should be fine on the 7.5 width rim, so it's a wash between a half-inch of width.

Would V710 overheat at hpde events or should I go with R1s if I want a tire that can do both? I've done about 3-4 events but only on street tires, and wouldn't mind having a tire capable for 30 minute sessions w/o blistering....

What track are you at? I would suggest keeping serious AX tire just for AX< so they last longer and get treated consistently. Maybe that's just a bunch of voodoo, but that's what I would tend to do. Stick with streets for track days, but if you are tearing the streets up (chunking, etc.) I would try to get something like Azeni RT-615's or Hankook RS2's in something small, like bottlecap size, since it's just HPDE, not a race. Something that will stand up to the abuse, but still make you conserve grip and all that jazz. I don't see the point in spending $1,000 in tires for an HPDE, esp. in a small car like an e30 or miata. Use Spec Miata scrubs when you want r's for track time. Get 'em pretty much for free.

          That's my take.

V710, unless you want to go cheap and than the Avon's are a good alternative. Also I run 225/40/R15x8 and I had do roll my fenders on a ET15 wheel. You should be fine on a 15x8 and not rolled.

From a tire sales/knowledge/design/mfg./etc. standpoint, and from an offical Tire Guy again, V710's. My old customer ran three of those on your list on an mild prepped mr2, and v710's took it better then the rest.

I've always been too impatient to heat cycle. But alot of the vette guys running 710's just buy them pre cycled from tirerack so they can be ready to go. There is also a compound that you can add to the tires. Can't remember the name at the moment but its supposed to keep the tires grippier longer.

NO do not heat cycle. This is just marketing BS.......Come summer time Kumho's are usually hard to get ahold of. Two different times I've ended up with 2 heat cycled and 2 NOT heat cycled tires on the car at the same time.
NO DIFFERENCE at all. Grip and wear. This was with 315/35/17 victoracers and 710's

Did you have two SETS or just two upfront and two rear? That wouldn't be a good test though unless you've tried heat cycled and not heat cycled on both ends of the car ? (since front/rear tires probably don't wear in the same way..)

Actually the car wore tires very evenly front to back. A little bit more wear up front but we are talking about a car that was close to 3400lbs. Both kinds of Kumho's and Hoosiers. Hoosiers were used but with a few runs so heat cycled but ALL of them were.

The Kumhos were two sets, two per set were heat cycled, two per set were not.....

In my mind after seeing this it was certainly NOT worth it.....

That's a good choice. 225/50/15 is the classic choice for track work. I run Toyo RA-1's in that size for informal HPDE use. With my Turner J-Stock suspension and TDR ProRace 1.2 wheels (15x7"), the tires fit perfectly without any rubbing at all.

However, I did have to do some very slight rolling of the inner fender lip on the rears (I have a plastic-bumper car with the low-cut rear fenders). I paid a local body shop a few bucks to do it properly using a heat lamp and fender roller. No cracks in the paint.

There is definitely an advantage to running 15x8" wheels if you're allowed to by your class rules. Even a 7.5" wheel is a bit narrow for 225-width tires.

Also, take a look at Hoosier A6 compound; they're the autocross version of the R6. Dunno how they stack against the V710s, but I've heard good things.
