Is it a e36 steering rack swap or are you just replacing a busted e30 rack for a new one?
Some tips from my last install (learned the hard way haha).
- Make sure you get new crush washers for everything from pelican parts or blunttech or you'll be leaking all over the place when you're done.
- If you're using a e36 rack and e30 high pressure hose bend it to get it to fit. It's a pain in the ass to bend but will make your life a lot less stressful if you make the bends. I almost gouged my eyes out in frusteration trying to "make it fit" before bending it.
- It's a good time to replace your inner and outer tie rods and having the inner tie rods removed makes getting to the rack 100% easier. Just make sure you get reassebmely right the first time.
- If wheel return feels stiff when you're done try adjusting the last a few degrees (big nut on the bottom of the rack, i think it's like 22mm).
- If your tie rod boots are broken on your old rack replace the power steering fluid reservoir when you replace the rack. It has a filter inside of it that can't be replaced individually. No need to go running a new rack with a old dirtied up filter.
- If you are a non-airbag car you will need to grind out your steering knuckle to ensure it doesn't bind. A dremel would work but something stronger would be preferable.
