I buff it too with the first cover on, helps make sure that that cover is extra shinny...

so by putting two covers on, is the outer most cover to protect the inner most cover from becoming damaged and thus no longer being able to protect the inside car from the outer most cover?

correct, thus the reasoning behind using 2 car covers. i also use a dash cover, steering wheel cover and seat covers.
