So CA has an actual visual inspection, correct? Here in Western WA, you just have to run it with a tail pipe sniffer (or plug in to OBD if it is a newer car), there is no visual inspection. And on the East side of the state, no emissions testing is required at all.
So it is literally illegal to do engine swaps for you CA residents? So if you were to have a 24v engine swap that is done cleanly and looks factory, is the average tech going to realize that it is not the original engine when he looks at it? Do they have a database with pictures and specific things to look for on every model of car? I'm just curious what would make you fail a visual inspection on a swapped car that has everything in good working condition. You would think that they would be okay with a person swapping a newer, more efficient, clean running, OBD engine in to an old car like e30's.

Yeah, the techs know and there's pictures and all sorts of gadgets to indicate to even the braindead techs what they should be putting/plugging in where.
It's not illegal, it just has to be run through the referees and get approved. If everything passes muster then it's all good otherwise if you do it on your own you'll fail and can't get registered and can't drive (not illegal, just won't be able to use the vehicle legally).
It's also more than just a visual and sniff test, we also have to go up on a dyno and the car is tested at 50/15 and 25/25 which means 15mph test at 50% load and 25mph at 25% load.Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!

Talk to me. It's not hard to get your car to pass the right way.. Contact me by phone or email.
Good luck to the OP. But honestly you should fix your car. Your probably burning way more gas since the engine aint right. My 2 cents.

some smog shops are really REALLY dumb. when the PO smogged my ix, they ran a 2wd test (no NOX). lucky for them that the transfer case was busted or they would have had a serious problem on their hands.1989 325is / 2.7, 274 cam, e30 M3 5-lug
