SAN DIEGO: Anyone have smoke test equipment?

I'm recycling my own thread. Want to do a smoke test, wondering if anyone has the gear. I can come to you or you can come to me in OB. Lemme know, thanks.

    Original Message, 09/21/12:

"I might need some help figuring out an issue with my car while I'm out of town. I'm in NYC for a few days and my girlfriend is using the car, there is a stalling issue and it's her only mode of transport while I'm gone so I don't want her to be strafed on my account. Here's what I know.

The car stalled out today after filling up the tank. She was only 1-2 miles from home and was able to restart it and get it home.

It happened about two weeks ago, also when she was driving. At that point I was able to diagnose it over the phone and figured out it was the main relay. I happened to have an extra one in the trunk and I walked her through how to change it over the phone.

But now it happened again, only this time I don't have an extra relay. Something else must be causing the relay to short out, or it's a different issue entirely.

It's strange that it only happens when she drives. I know I know, haha, she's a woman....but I honestly can't think of anything she could be doing to cause this. She's a good careful driver, and she knows to go easy on the throttle until the car warns up, and to watch out for bumps in the road.

Best case scenario, I just replaced a faulty relay with another faulty relay. Or maybe there's some kind of leak in the fuel delivery system.

Worse case, I have a vacuum leak somewhere.

Worst case, it's the transmission. It's an automatic, but perhaps it's slipping and not getting into gear, causing a stall like a manual would stall. The tranny has been doing funny things lately. (on occasion, when first starting up, it takes a long time to get out of first gear and revs pretty high at low speeds). I've been planning on swapping to a 5sp in the near future but still don't have the funds.

Anyway, if anyone happens to be willing and able to pop over to my place in OB and take a look, I would be willing to return the favor somehow. You'd be dealing with my girlfriend so be a gentleman. And I'd probably walk you through a few things over the phone.

Anyway, if someone's around today or tomorrow, please hit me up in this thread or pm me.
    Thanks very much."

Autocorrect correction: stranded, not strafed. I don't know what strafed means but it sounds like raped and I certainly don't want her to be raped while I'm gone.

^ This. My autotragic was doing weird things before the torque converter went out. I would check the fluid levels as well. I would help if I had time off work, but I got a busy weekend and two exams on Monday / Tuesday. Anyways... good luck and I would start saving for a 5-speed.

does fuel pump make humming noise? could be going out
or a loose connection to the fuel pump? happened to my car. Person before me put a whole new pump in a couple years ago so when my car wouldn't start i thought it couldn't be the pump it's brand new. i jiggled the wires and it fired up. still need to wire on a new plug. you have to pop backseat up and undo 4 screws hopefully she could do that.

Yes I believe it does hum. I might be able to walk her through the fuel pump, I know where it is.
