    E36 cali legal questions

Im going to be taking my moms E36 for a while and doing some repairs on it. One of them being a head gasket. The cylinders are still all sealed and the oil isnt milkshake. Its just the passenger side rear corner blew out. so im going to get it taken care of before it gets really bad.

    So here are my questions.

Will a obd1 intake manifold still comply with cali smog laws?
I plan on putting M3 cams in it will that effect anything?

they are only two questions but im sure i will have more. Just let me know.

I do not live in california but the car will be living there when I hand it back to my mother.

I think you'll be fine with the intake manifold and cams. There are write-ups that show how to correctly swap over the obd1 intake manifold, while still retaining obd2 specific ports and hoses.

The cams won't be an issue either. I had both an m52 with s52 cams, and an s52 engine in an e30 and smogged them both as a standard e36 325i. Both passed smog with no issues.

cant have a obd2 engine passed as a obd1. Went through this with a buddy a month or so ago and was stopped in his tracks when the bar ref told him it wont pass. as far as cams go i assume your fine. i bard mine before swapping but ive heard there isnt an issue.

Someone might have a sneaky way of going from two to one and outsmarting the refs though. who knows

He is not talking about an OBD1 conversion. He's talking about the OBD1 manifold.

Technically the manifold would still be illegal but I'd be very surprised if a tech noticed or said anything.
