DMV Title Search : Help Requested

I'm an East Coast guy. I need someone familiar with the system to advise me.

Vehicle title has been reworked at least once. I am trying to find if this vehicle was ever registered or titled in California. I'm doing a Wayne Carrini on a car.

Is there a way to search or CA registration or title by VIN?

    Thanks.

It only goes back to a title re-issue in 2008. 24 years still unaccounted for...

      Carfax is only so good.

My knowledge of the CA DMV vin number search is only from "gone in 60 seconds" - I do know that if a vehicle is "abandoned" and you have it, you can find out who the owner is, and try to contact them. And if you try to contact them, and then time goes by, it's yours. Well, that's the way it is for boats anyways.

        You might try this.... http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/online/vrr

Warning the CA DMV blows. Your best bet it to call the sacramento headquaters, and talk to them. They will say "no" at first - they are trained to always say "no"...

Let us know how it works. There is a car or two I would like to track down as well.
