Looking to Move to SoCal - San Diego Area

Hello, I currently reside in Angola, IN. I'm looking to relocate to SoCal, somewheres around the San Diego area, but I have a small situation. My wife wants me to make the trip, find a job, and place to live, before she will make the venture. Finding a job for myself shouldn't be a problem, I unfortunately don't have any college education, yet. But I am extremely mechanically inclinded, very skillful on a PC, I like to call myself a "Jack of All Trades". I have 3 years of manual machining under my belt, as well as, a few months being a button-pushing CNC Operator. I have looked on various online job sties and see that there is a fair share of these types of jobs out there. I was wondering someone might have a room/couch/attic/basement/hall closet/cardboard box for rent? I would also be in need of a parking space for my vehicle. I consider myself a neat and orderly person.

    A few more questions/answers:

    1. How much income do I need to look at making to be able to live half away decent?

    2. I was joking about the "cardboard box".

    3. I'm not looking for a place to stay for FREE, but the cheaper the better. I am willing to contribute as much as I can.

    4. I am a 23 year old, white male. I'm not a racist/terrorist/thief/liar or anything malignate of that nature.

    5. Ask questions if you have any, I will try to answer then as honestly as I can. Within reason.

Halfway decent means many things to many people. Cost of living is probably at least double where you're at now. Even crashing with someone I'd expect to spend $2k a month on fuel/expenses/etc. YMMV.

      Have you checked Craigslist?

      Buyer beware, as always.

      North County rules, IMO.

I didn't even think about CL, I checked on MySpace but I didn't see anything too promising.

Vista and San Marcos sound right up your alley. I grew up in North County. It's expensive, and suburbia-ish, but I love it. I will probably move back there some day. You should check out Vista, San Marcos and Oceanside based on your price range.

I found some reasonable places in San Marcos, actually. I just can't wait to get out there and begin.

Definitely hit up Craigslist. I lived out in Palm Springs, CA area for 6 months last year, and visited 6-7 different houses and possible rental areas. Chose one, and decided I wanted to move to a furnished room, and found another better option on craigslist, and even had a garage spot!

I even found the room I'm living in now in Peoria on good ole' Craigslist. I've never had any issues at all! Definitely some interesting individuals, but when someone puts in their ad, "You'll be sharing my room! I'm a smoker and 420 is ok" (420 = weed btw) you know for a fact that they're gonna be off the deep end. So, just know what to look for. ;)

Lots of people don't know how I was able to do it, but I guess I can just judge a person's character pretty well. My friend here in town just found a place to live in SC too! Craigslist started in CA if I remember correctly, so it's VERY active!

Ok...I think you get the point now. hehe

Yes it's very surprising what you'll find on CL. I found an ad that was almost exactly as you describe about being "420 friendly".

In all seriousness, the San Diego area can get pretty expensive and its like that everywhere there. I had two separate relatives that live there and the most recent is my aunt. She has a two bedroom two bath condo and pays 2400 a month. She is one of the lucky ones that caught on in school and now she accounts supervisor and makes 28 an hour and she started that job about 6 months ago.

If you are looking for a fairly cheap and great place to start a new life, I'd say shoot for Ventura county. That's where I live and an everyday man can afford to live here on about 2500 per month gross salary. There are plenty of indy shops that pay well and are always hiring. Gas here is about the same as everywhere else but what's nice is everything is very close. You would be right in the middle of anything you need. You're 30 minutes from Santa Barbara, 30 minutes from calabasas. And there are four BMW dealers within 30 minutes of me. Closest to farthest, Steve Thomas BMW, Santa Barbara BMW, Bob Smith BMW and Rusnak. So for a BMW owner its pretty conveinient. If you want, I live in Ventura and would be willing to give up my couch for a bit if you want to check out Ventura county.

                  Let me know.

He's in a little different situation sweetheart. Sorry if I kicked sand in your vagina!!!

I just thought I'd be the nice guy and offer him a spot since he's looking for a place.

Generosity comes back to you ten fold so I will be generous.

I'm still waiting for the government to start paying me back for my generosity to them for the last 4 years of getting shafted by them.

                        Haha

You are very generous my e30fiend, lol... I hope this dude is really cool 'cuz he said he owns Devil Inc, but if he isn't, you know where I'm at! we gonna get some cuuuzzins up his Devil Inc ass and give him a welcome to socal greeting; braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatatatatatatat, lol, jk

Devil Inc; socal is more expensive than where you live. I live in a 2bdrm in El Segundo which is adjacent to LAX airport and 1/8 of a mile from the beach (i love surfing) and rent out here is $1650/mo.; my share is $800 per month with utilities (people say it's a steal, but it's still expensive). ideally, you want to make at least $40k a year to survive in LA, but I got by when I used to make $30k (just starving myself though and was balling in a very TIGHT BUDGET, lol). If you were not white, then I would say live in the ghetto and you will have cheap rent (if you decide to stay in LA). You see, I'm Filipino, so I can live with black and mexicans and they won't bug me, but you'll shine in their streets especially at night, so it would probably not be a good idea, however, rent is very cheap. I used to pay $775 with utilities included for a large one bedroom apartment (approx. 1000 sq ft) in the city of hawthorne, but at night it was a street pharmacy...

i find everything in CL; my current career that pays pretty good (enough for me to drop $1k on my ride per every other pay check), i found all the places i stayed in CL especially my current one (i went on room shared, typed in 420, and found my place, :D)... it's funny that no one likes 420 friendly roommates because they think that they are flat broke, but I'm one of those peeps and I'm not broke (just like to say I am, so I can save for retirement), but I'm breaking bread, homie! matter of fact, some of the 420 ads i met in person were young lawyers, doctors, financial consultants, in other words, real professional making bank and enjoys 420 smoking than drinking beers... speaking about which, I'm on my way home from work and i got one rolled up, ;)

I would allow you to stay at my place, but I'm 420 all the way, so when you walk in my pad, you probably wouldn't find your way to the kitchen 'cuz of all the smoke, lol

just stay with Taylor for now and we'll see how it goes... I wish you the best, sir!

I lost as to what you said about owning Devil Inc. There is a shirt/hat company in Canada that goes by Devil Inc, but that company just arrived on scene a few years ago. I've been using the name for almost 10 years. Unless there is someone else that goes by that name. My wife will be following me out a few months behind, so we'll be able to combine our income.
