    I need you.

After checking out a few smog guys here in socal, they are all too scared to do anything tricky for a swap. One said though that if I could get my hands on an unswapped e30, he could get it done for me. I don't have an eta engine any more, and the only car I could borrow is an i. My car is an 86 325e so I'd need something at least with the same engine. Color and matching years would be nice but I dont think it's necessary.

So does anyone have a passing eta who'd be willing to help me smog?

the smog guy kerrath and i went to said that if he switches license plates with another car with the right engine, he will smog it no problem. none of the "accomplis's" info will be shared

edit: i'd do it but my car is a late model :(

its called a clean car. you just need another car that will pass. it doesnt have to be an e30. my friends swapped e30 passed thanks to my shop's ford ranger. the smog tech will usually just scan your registration and then run the other car.

        its pretty simple

i have a guy near me that will do it but not for the standard smog check price. 200 bones and its a done deal.

My eta would pass... if it ran. If you figure out my no-spark issue you're welcome to run it :D

this guy I talked to would only do it if it were essentially the same car. Since people around have been getting busted he wants to make sure he's in the clear and the only way he feels he can do that is by smogging a nearly identical car that switched the plates out.

We considered for about 2 seconds trying to use my volvo to do that exact thing and instantly decided it'd fail. Lol.

I worry that if you can't solve it then I couldn't either, but I'd still be willing to try. If you've got some details on the symptoms, I could start making some stuff up and try and figure it out.

Well, the main issue is that I've had next to no time to work on it. I know the ECU works, and the dist cap/rotor have been swapped as well as the pulse and ref sensors. My hypothesis is either coil, a break in the excite wire to the coil, or a dropped reference pin on the flywheel. However, the car is parked at Farbin's, and we haven't had a chance to check it yet.

I don't know what passing smog standards are in CA - here are my NJ emissions results from when it passed in 2007:

                  NOx - 1196
                  HC - 122
                  CO% - 0.50
                  CO2% - 14.5

It looks like it'd fail on the NOx. The maximum for an 86es is 1136 and I assume it'd be the same for an e. Not far off for 15mph, but if that's the # at 25mph, then it definitely wouldn't pass. The rest are passable but close.

I believe I have a spare coil in my trunk if you think it'd be of any use. My flywheel is dual mass and kinda ugly after it's been sitting for a while so I doubt that'd be of use. If there's anything you think I could do, let me know and I'll give it a shot. Wanna get my car finally legal. Ish.

I pay 150 and use my car
the way the guy does it is weird bc he uses your car in neutral or in my case park

no idea what speed it was at, but the standard NOx is 1227 in NJ for my car. Regardless, it can go down pretty simply with a tune-up, which I intend on performing very soon. Car needs oil/filter, plugs, and some other small maintenance stuff that I will do once it runs again.
