Looking for good reliable machine shop in northern virginia

I'm rebuilding the m20 this summer and need help finding a machine shop for some work to the block. Anyone have any favorites or know of anyplace preferably close to Fairfax?

There are many reputable shops in NOVA. Look on NCC's web site they have recommended businesses to deal with.

I used Tyson's Machine in Sterling for a few things on my S52 rebuild.

I had used J&F in Arlington

The machine shop allowed me to bring my own valves and valve stems. Granted this was some years back. The also TIG weld a head for me after it fell off my work bench and had cracks in three spots on a S50 head.

          Thanks for the referrals!

Yea I just didn't want to show up at some random joe-shmoe shop and rely on them to do quality work without doing research.

How were the costs? I'm not doing anything extensive. The reason I'm rebuilding is because I just recently spun a rod bearing. So I figured I might as well replace what I can that's worn. I also gotta check the crank to see how it looks, but from what I've heard, BMW made them pretty bulletproof.

im very suspicious of J&F. When i bought my e30, it came with a huge stack of receipts from them. They did pretty much all the work on the car. I've found a lot of shady, shitty work. The worst of it is the cut and spliced c101 .

Yea I'm looking for a machine shop to handle the rebuild of my m20 as well. Preferably in Virginia Beach but I'd haul the parts up to NOVA if they were reliable and experienced.

That is not the machine shop, but that does sound frightening none the less. Are you sure they cut the C101 connector?

I have no connection to them just that I have used them before and was happy. They did what I needed for a good price at the time.

You plan to rebuild an M20? I'd just go 24V vs redoing an M20 the cost of rebuilds can creep up very quickly.

good point. This was long ago anyhow, and I think the shop may have changed hands since then.

I assume they did it because the PO definitely didnt work on the car himself.

Yea I looked into doing a 24v swap but all I'm really looking for is a fun DD. I'm just rebuilding the m20 to stock specs. Eventually (once I'm out of college and can afford it) I'd like to stroke it to 2.8 and possibly turbo it, but I'm more a fan of raw hp and torque rather than blown motors and blow-off valves. But who knows.

Anyone ever heard of or used Silver Star Motors? I know my parents had them do some work on the benz but I'm not sure if they do any machine work on BMW's or how good they would be with them.

I've used Tyson Machine and Burtonsville Machine. Both are good, but Tyson was quicker and more personal and a bit less expensive.

OK I got the head and block dropped off at Tysons Machine. The guy really seems to know what he's doing and is pretty honest. Now I just need to find a place to get the flywheel lightened a bit. Any suggestions?

they can't do it at the tysons place?

My dad and brother have taken some things to the fairfax autoparts machine shop on lee highway. Mostly just for bead blasting shit and turning rotors, but they're fast and cheap. And they've had some BMW motors (m50) in there for rebuilds.
