The simple fact of the matter is that the OP has nothing to worry about, just go register your car and get it over with. No one in the MVA or the police for that matter gives two shits if you're driving your "historic" car on a tuesday.

OP, everyone gets historic because you don't have to go through inspection or emissions and it's half the price. You will not have any problems.

Like everyone else, my car has historic tags. I actually bought the car in December and waited until January to register it so I could get the historic tags and save on the $ for inspection and regular tags.

You are supposed to have another car as your main car if you get a historic plate, the lady at the MVA asked me if I had another car before she processed my paperwork. (It also says the same thing on the form you fill out.) I don't think she looked it up since she only typed in a few things from my form and then handed me my new historic plates and I was out of there.

I do know a friend who only has 1 car and his car is registered historic which you're not supposed to do, but like I said I don't think anyone is checking or really cares.

Really? Where does annotated traffic law or MVA regs say so? Prove it? Look at the application, where does it ask about other vehicles?


You're implying that I cannot have a historic vehicle registered soly to me if I do not have another vehicle registered? So now the MVA cares if I have a car in the state or registered elsewhere? Here, my wife has all the cars in her name. Now what? I can't haZ historic? I ride the metro everyday and have a historic car for parades.

You have no proof. I am familiar with traffic law and the like. Prove it, I did.

OP: Get a car eligible for historic registration. It is just fine. I think it is a great deal, too. Read and realize the law and the implications of historic registration per the MVA. Then realize this registration classification is not a major enforcement issue.

I know for a fact there is bullshit being spoken. There is no requirement you have another vehicle registered to obtain historic plates. The first bit of posting was accurate, personal accounts. Then some ninja internet bullshit was said.

Again, this is not a hot spot for traffic enforcement IMHO. For it to be enforced and then even hold up in court would be difficult especially given the county.

you do need another car to register historic, a historic vehicle is not meant to be your primary DD.


OP, yeah it will work if its in your dad's name. but more than likely when they say, "do you have another vehicle in your name" just say yes and smile.

I don't know what is required to pass inspection in MD. My parking brake hardly works and it still passes NC inspection. Then again, NC inspectors work at Jiffy Lube and don't really even pop my hood. The only thing I could think of that would hold me back is the oil leakage. It's not much, but it's still there.

to get historic tags you need to have another vehicle in your name, becuase historic tags have limitations-you can only drive the car five days in a row...i know weird!
when i went to get mine i put the car in someone elses name, but the guy simply asked if we had another vehicle then did the paperwork, he didn't look in the computer so idk maybe you can just say you do.

MD historic tags say HISTORIC on the them, so technically you could get a ticket for driving too often if the cop is a dick, to hide the historic do what i did, get some license plate frames. BAM you just beat the system!
now you can modify the fuck out of your ride and not deal with inspections.

However, the E30 is in my Dad's name. He has two other cars (registered in NC). Would that count?

The Majority of the College Park crew has historic tags, only a few don't because they are dd'ing it long distance. I haven't heard of anyone getting in any kind of trouble with them. everyone with a swap has them that I know of.

I live in Bethesda and e30Brian lives in Rockville. You should come out with us to the Weekly Friday Meets when you get a chance. Where in Rockville are you? I'm right off of Old Georgetown and 495.

I'm within walking distance of Twinbook Metro. I actually work in Bethesda, though. Haha, I meant to come out to a few Friday meets but I always get kinda drunk at happy hour instead.

All my freinds with e30s have them, I dont want to give up my CCA plates so ill take the emmisions test, my car still passes with 236k

Both of my 325s have historic tags. No hassles by mva employees when applying and the police really don't care much about it. It is almost a joke for them. Welcome to the neighborhood.

Haha, I mean, I'm just glad to have to avoid going through the hassle of getting it inspected. It's in fine shape and all, it's just that it leaks oil, the parking brake needs to be adjusted (read: completely replaced), and it would be on the borderline of passing emissions.

I don't see why they would enforce my historic status. I was just curious if anyone else on the board had it. Seems like it's a way to beat the system, so to speak.

Where in MD are you going to? And also Western Maryland does not have emission test. Unlike the rest of the state.

MD Historic FTW. One rare way to get a good deal around here.

The way the law reads it would be very difficult to enforce let alone for an officer to prove in court. Now as eTIX gains popularity notes can be made for a particular registration; however still, the enforcement of it is not in law enforcement's radar IMHO.

My friend has Historic tags on her 1991 Ford Festiva. It is a nice car that would pass inspection, but you just got to ask yourself...Really!!!! And judging by alot of other cars on the road in Maryland that has Historic tags, Most that i see are piles of junk. I have not seen or heard about anyone getting hassled about thier Historic tags. Oh, my location may say PA, but i spend 90% of my time in MD.
