MD Historic Registration

Like everyone else, my car has historic tags. I actually bought the car in December and waited until January to register it so I could get the historic tags and save on the $ for inspection and regular tags.

You are supposed to have another car as your main car if you get a historic plate, the lady at the MVA asked me if I had another car before she processed my paperwork. (It also says the same thing on the form you fill out.) I don't think she looked it up since she only typed in a few things from my form and then handed me my new historic plates and I was out of there.

I do know a friend who only has 1 car and his car is registered historic which you're not supposed to do, but like I said I don't think anyone is checking or really cares.

The simple fact of the matter is that the OP has nothing to worry about, just go register your car and get it over with. No one in the MVA or the police for that matter gives two shits if you're driving your "historic" car on a tuesday.

OP, everyone gets historic because you don't have to go through inspection or emissions and it's half the price. You will not have any problems.

read up on the mva law, here is a quote- " The vehicle owner further certifies the vehicle will not be used for general daily transportation or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways"

ok so you certify that it will not be a daily driver...then what are you gonna use as your DD? call up a tag/title agency and ask them. i will put money down on this, i went through this BS last month!

You're implying that I cannot have a historic vehicle registered soly to me if I do not have another vehicle registered? So now the MVA cares if I have a car in the state or registered elsewhere? Here, my wife has all the cars in her name. Now what? I can't haZ historic? I ride the metro everyday and have a historic car for parades.

OP: Get a car eligible for historic registration. It is just fine. I think it is a great deal, too. Read and realize the law and the implications of historic registration per the MVA. Then realize this registration classification is not a major enforcement issue.

I/We, certify under oath that the vehicle will only be maintained for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation

Read the form. I have it right here. The form only asks of the car you are wishing to register as historic.

The bottom of the disclaimer only says you understand it "will not be used for general daily transportation or primary for the transportation of passengers or property highways".

The lady at the counter can ask any other questions she wants, that is great and she has the opportunity to however it bears no significance to the application. How you answer - if you even answer - is up to you. But it is no required per the MVA nor their application.

Of course you are to not use it as a DD. That is not the issue. That is obvious as a historic vehicle is clearly defined and later referred as a vehicle with limited use. This is where I keep qualifying that this is not routinely - dare I say ever - enforced. I know.

And it is not hostile at all. Take it how you will but there is some BS being said and this guy is looking for a clear answer. Read the law before the internet's johnny cochran of MVA policy and resident traffic enforcement liaison speaks.

Tag and Title? MVA? Doesn't matter. I don't care what the $10/hr agent is trying to ask it is not a requirement. Read the law. Read the MVA form.The answers are there. I don't need an agent. I have the law and form in front of me. Just like you could.

OP. Read the law. Read what I posted. And what others have. Historic is the way to go with these cars or really anything eligible for it. Do it. Seems like all your internet friends are anyhow.

My friend has Historic tags on her 1991 Ford Festiva. It is a nice car that would pass inspection, but you just got to ask yourself...Really!!!! And judging by alot of other cars on the road in Maryland that has Historic tags, Most that i see are piles of junk. I have not seen or heard about anyone getting hassled about thier Historic tags. Oh, my location may say PA, but i spend 90% of my time in MD.
