            Clark is looking for this:

            Counter Holder/Fan Removal Tool
BMW M10, M20, M30, M50, with 32mm Clutch Nut, Each (BMW Service Tool Reference #11-5-030)
These counter holders are a necessity for removing the water pump from your BMW they are used to secure the fan hub While you remove the fan clutch pulley nut.

NOTE: The bolts on the water pump are non-symmetric, which means that you need to rotate the fan to find the two that will fit the tool properly. Only one position out of four potential positions will work.

Yup that is what I need. Do dealers stock these tools? Or should I just order it from Pelican?

I always wrap an old belt around the fan clutch and stick a screwdriver in and twist until it holds tight, then zip off the nut with the impact wrench. Takes 3 seconds...

How the hell do you get an impact gun on the fan clutch bolt? There is the fan clutch attached to it? Do tell how this is possible.

                          oh, the fan holding tool?

I just jam a long flathead screwdriver in between two of the asymmetrical nuts that stoliver was talking about, in such a way as to be able to apply torque in the opposite direction of the wrenching action.

once the bolt is even slightly loose, you don't need the holding thing.

Yea i have tried this method but the bearing are shot in my water pump so the pulley just wiggles around and you can't keep it stable. teh lame otherwise I would have finished the job on Saturday.

I unbolted the fan and wrapped the belt around the actual clutch, the screwdriver is used to tighten the belt, not on the fan clutch. I'm not sure what you mean by how do I get the impact gun on it? I have thinwall sockets, but I think a regular socket fit.

Don't forget that its reverse threads too, first time I tried to take it off I managed to tighten it so far we used a breaker bar + 3 foot metal pipe + two broken belts + lots of blood to get it loose once we figured out it was reverse.

Zombie said it right too, once its even a touch loose it comes out easy.
