its a fair offer, "might need some work on the lower end" can mean that the engine is totally shot. Get the engine to run before you buy if you can and determine the "lower end work" you need. If the engine is indeed shot, the car isn't worth a penny more than $400, IF everything else is in good shape. diving boards and 4-door are both undesirable traits.

        I may be selling my 318is.... ;)

Yeah, I've got the feeling from the ad that it's toast.

Diving boards, agreed. What's involved in replacing those with something else?

          4 door, that's debatable. ;)

Likely for more than what I can afford...

diving boards can be swapped to plastics. The front is just a bolt-on job, the rear is a little more involved, in that you have to cut and re-glue the rear plastic bumper back together, because the late model plastic will protrude into the wheel well. Although don't quote me on this. iirc maybe the 87-88 had the later wheel well that made the rear a bolt-on job. But do the research there is tons of bumper swapping info here on R3V.

just tuck the bumpers, looks better anyways imo.

                Will do, thanks.

Not much over $1000, and even that is a stretch. :/

He claims that it's in great mechanical condition, no accidents, only rust being on the quarter panels. I have no reason to not believe him on that, obviously I'll be going over the car before I buy it anyway...

                  Thoughts?

Should I pay it? or just find another car?

Great mechanical condition? He says in the posting the bottom end may need work... I'd ask for clarification if he's so set on the price... Don't tell him it's going to be a swap car too, otherwise he'll just tell you to fuck off about the motor since it's getting yanked anyway...

Besides the motor. There are other mechanical parts to the car. But I'd agree. $650 is too much if it has motor issues.

I told him the motor in there is essentially worthless even if it was in great shape, which is true because M20s are a dime for 3 dozen.

I need to find an E30 with coilovers and a blown motor. ugh.

I'm aware there are other mechanical parts, but they all mean dick if the motor can't power them...

You ain't gonna find a shell with coils and shit for under 1k. I'd consider the best shell you can and just pick it up for what you can

YES! do this. Do NOT come to a deal over the phone. ALWAYS go look without mentioning anything at ALL about price. Don't even ask if he is negotiable.
