Sam, mm is the common way to interpret the amount of "zoom" or how "wide angle" a lens is. 28-105 on a non full frame camera is a pretty normal "all around" lens. The zoom range is about the same you will find on a common point and shoots. 28mm is missing a lot on the wide range though. The "f" numbers after the lens is the maximum aperture, which you can look up by yourself because I don't want to type photography 101.
