question, has anyone swapped a m5x into an ix yet? I've been very interested in the idea for some time now

Yea, it's been done. It requires welding the E30 iX pan and the E34 M50 pan together to give clearance for the front diff. An M50 iX pan (euro) will NOT work, to the best of my knowledge. Something about hub/diff alignment geometry.
Most guys just turbo the iX. Much more cost effective, and the M20 loves boost like a fat kid loves cake.Comment

with about $500-1k of custom machining and fabrication and then another $500 for a tune, yes.
Not worth it, people have done it and there are ZERO gains to be had on an S52 motor. ITBs really are just bling, they don't add power.Comment

Blasphemy, anything S54 is betterzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!89 325i (Sold)

Only on a restrictive intake setup. For everyone who has tried it on an M/S5x motor, there has been ZERO benefit. Maybe +1 or 2 hp max, which is within dyno error.
It improves throttle response and sound, that's it. If ITBs really did a whole lot, wouldn't Porsche use them on their GTx cars? Or Ferrari? They don't, and the guys who have spent the shitloads of money retrofitting S54 ITBs onto a S50/2 US motor have seen zero worthwhile gains on the dyno.Comment

Yup. The ITBs can flow more air than the head can deal with. So can the stock M50 manifold, so there really isn't a point to upgrade it. Hell, major power turbo guys rarely change the intake manifold, the $/hp gain is horrid.Comment

They change it when they begin to run substantial amounts of boost because the plastic M50 manifolds explode.89 325i (Sold)

Nah, the dinosaurs would be squished if it were that high of pressure. Haven't you ever seen Journey to the Center of the Earth? Shame on you.
Also, beer and pizza in 1.5hrs.
And I just got in to work today. My schedule suuuucks.Comment
