It is possible to do GC on the cheap. Buy their coilover spring kit ($400) buy Koni's for an iX ($500 or so, not sure) and do the DIY coilover conversion in the DIY section. Just don't lower it all the way until you save up for camber plates.
I need moar parts!!!!

Not worth it AT ALL. When you can just spend the extra $600 and get the camber plates and your strut tubes powder-coated by GC and have the lifetime warranty on the whole thing, shocks included. Never have to buy shocks again....

Biiiiiig +1. Wuthout a warranty on my ASTs I would be up shit creek. Same for Ben when his Koni blew. That $600 extra is WELL worth it. Plus, you get camber plates, rear shock mounts, bumpstops, AND GC-valved Konis that are designed for an e30 for muxed street/track. Being pennywise but pound foolish is the definition of doing the diy coilover setup.Comment

I don't like my GC/Koni setup at all. My "racecar" with more than 2x the spring rate (and AST's) rides nicer than my daily driver.
Off-the-shelf Konis are great for off-the-shelf lowering springs. They are not made to work well with 500+ lb coilover springs... And Konis are old, old shock technology compared with the other options out there. Bilsteins are a much better quality piece.Comment

Hold on a second Chris, I'm not comparing the GC kit to other coilover kits, because if I were, I'd agree with you. I'm comparing the GC kit to a simple konis + spring kit. The value of the GC kit (lifetime warranty, all the parts incl. etc), is much better than that of a koni + spring kit, and can be made to ride the same or better. Now if you go and put 700lb springs in the rear with a GC coilover kit, then yeah, that's going to be a crappy ride.I don't like my GC/Koni setup at all. And Bilstein generic shocks suck. Sure, they're a better shock, no doubts there, but unless you're driving on a freshly paved lot/track, your kidneys will hate you. I used to think the E30 bilstein kit was O.K., but the last few times I've driven one with it, it's been miserable.

I liked my GCs, and the customer service. I was looking into ASTs to a degree when I sold the car. I have some Bilsteins in OEM strut housings I need to sell
PM me for detailing services in the Longmont / Boulder Area in Colorado!
