What is it with the people in Boulder?

At the risk of sounding like a certain fellow Boulderite who seems to get under r3v skin, what the fuck is up with people in Boulder? There is an unusually high number of self important people, both men & women, who seem to think they are entitled to special treatment. Working in a service industry I see this on an almost daily basis; someone comes in, wants a service that they themselves cannot perform, want it done on the spot, while they wait, and are shocked when they are charged a normal labor rate for said service. WTF. When did it become a shock to people that you have to pay for services rendered? If there is something I can't do, or choose not to do, I expect to have to pay someone for it. I've got news for the people of Boulder; if we're all special, and deserve special treatment, that means nobody is fucking special, and we should all be treated the same.

It has become so regular in my daily interactions with customers that I've pretty much made up my mind that 1. Boulder sucks and 2. I'm getting the hell out of this town & back to the mountains where people are humble, hardworking, and grateful for service industry workers. I'd love to hear the opinions of fellow Boulder residents on why there seems to be such a high level of people with a sense of entitlement, I know that not everyone acts this way. I've met plenty of nice, polite people here, but never in my life have I lived & worked anywhere with so many holier-than-thou fucktards.

    /rant.

Yeah, that's boulder man. Nobody fucking works, they all live beyond their means, and expect everything handed to them. Not all of us flat-landers are like that, but I agree, mountain towns are much better when it comes to work ethic.

There are a lot of spoiled people in Boulder, more than other places because CU attracts Californian and Texan transplants, people with more money than brains who have never had to work a day in their lives.

I grew up here, and while I love the town and area, I couldn't agree with you more on the entitled douchetard attitudes of some folks.

Don't let the bastards get you down though, they win if you do.

      Also, come to Wings tonight!

^wings is a definite possibility. Thanks for letting me know it's not just me being overly sensitive.

I didn't say that. You have a legitimate complaint, but you're also being a bit sensitive about it. Next time someone acts like an ass towards you, say what you wrote up there in response, that you provide a service they cannot do themselves and you are entitled to payment for the labor and time spent on said service. If they are too dense to understand that, they're a useless person.

Don't extrapolate the actions of spoiled people (I'm assuming you are meaning more of college age folks) on the whole city population. Just like not everyone owns a subaru or prius or votes democrat, not all people in boulder lack common decency, sense, and tact.

I only work in Boulder. I have no desire to live there and can't really see why anyone would want to. It's not even pretty, too packed, people drive slow, and apparently lots of them are jerks. No thanks.

Unfortunately, the bulk of my customers are well-to-do professionals in their 30's or older. I can fully understand a college kid trying to save some money as much as possible. Actually, most college kids who come in are more than happy to pay for something we fix for them while they wait. Conversely, if your in your early 40's, drive a newer Audi/Merc/BMW/whatever, have a second home in the mountains, and just came back from a trip to Europe, I don't really want to hear about how you don't have the funds to repair your $6000 bikes clapped out drive-train, or bitch about labor charges for tuning, cleaning, installation, and so on.

Last week we had a fellow come in, ask to borrow a tool (against shop policy), bitch about labor charges until we finally let him use it, he broke said tool while using it, refused to pay for it's replacement, and left the shop pissed at US. He told us it's a part of the "cost of doing business." There is a reason we don't lend tools, and that is pretty much it, in a nut shell.

Wow, yea, that's shitty. I hate lending out my own personal tools, I totally understand why a shop wouldn't.

                Where do you work btw?

Boulder Cycle Sport, we've got 2 stores 1 on N. Broadway, and 1 at S. Broadway and Table Mesa. I'm usually at the South store, it's right next to Southern Sun. The shop is great, I like my co-workers, but I've been a mechanic for 8 years and never have I seen so many people complain about such ridiculous shit.
