funny, me and Ross (monkeytaco) are both actively looking for cars to rally prep. I currently have a '91 318is and an '88 528e, one of which may see rally duty in the near future. Also, OP, if you want to rally, talk to me or ross, and next time we go you can come along and drive one of our cars. It is only $10 to rally all day. Oh, and screw SCCA rallycross. it is boring, and you get very little seat time. for $10, go to CORE, race on the circuit, and literally get hours of seat time. yes, HOURS.
EDIT: also, "winning" isn't what is fun. Doing 70 on the straight and throwing sheets of dirt around every corner is fun.Comment

After experiencing the SCCA Rallycross events, I'd say they have their ups and downs. They do have accurate timing equipment if you're learning how to actually go fast on dirt (i.e. good car control) but Sam's right as far as seat time goes. 6-8 runs maximum for about 1.5 minutes each for $45 is a bit spendy. CORE will let you run all day for $10 and they have several circuits and places to run stages. There's no substitute for seat time, any racer will tell you that, but you do need to learn basic car control on dirt. SCCA has a lot of people willing to let you ride along with them - they'll also ride with you and give you coaching.funny, me and Ross (monkeytaco) are both actively looking for cars to rally prep. I've got 2 cars right now I'm trying to figure out what to do with and I'm looking for an AWD or RWD 5-speed car to exclusively prep for rally. I did enjoy the SCCA event, but doubt that I would make regular appearances there. I have a lot of interest in running some timed stage rally out at CORE and other venues...which I'm working on getting set up.
Best cheap option: buy a cheap beater off craigslist and do nothing to it other than learn to control it on dirt and wrench it to keep it reliable. You can drive literally ANYTHING that isn't actually falling apart or leaking like a sieve in SCCA rally, and then you have your own car to take to CORE to gain experience.
If you just want someone else's car to hoon you're going to pay big $.
Come with us to the next rally day! I'll let just about anyone have a go in my rally car (once I figure out which one that will be). :)Comment

you won't die at CORE (right away) just make sure you are driving within your limits and comfort range and you will be fine. And don't rally a truck.Comment
