    Won't you fuck up your bearings with coolant floating around in your oil? I think I saw an M50 on CL last night;

      yes it will not be good for bearings to have water as lubricant. So far, apparently the car has been run for quite some time with the oil like that (30% coolant) and it still seems like it has full power, but then again, that just makes me want to ditch the motor altogether even more, since it may be messed up further than I know, and doing head work will just be putting band-aids on the wound, without a full rebuild, which just plain isn't worth it.

      Thanks for the link, I have been talking to that guy, but lost contact, one of us neglected to write back, i'll have to dig up that convo. Also, $500 is alot for an M50.

          ok, it may just come down to what motor I find that is in good shape for a decent price. I just want my E30 to run and drive, and more power is always acceptable. other M42s are also not out of the question.

            There is no debate. Vanos is better, always. More torque, much better aftermarket and oem support, much more plentiful engines if you blow one up....

            there is NO reason to go with an M50NV unless you want M20 power with M50 reliability. It's a pointless motor to swap, unless you can't find an M50 vanos....in which case I'd just stay M42.

            Cost to fix M42: $1-200ish depending on what's wrong with the head.

            Cost to find and swap an M50NV: $1k+ with oil pan, brake booster, exhaust, ecu, intake, fuel, transmission brace, driveshaft, etc. Plus you have to wire it up.

            Spend the money to fix the M42 and be happy. Unless you have all the swap parts sitting around already it will not be cheaper.

                If you’re interested I have an M50b25tu with an e34 oil pan, e36 engine mount arms, obd1 DME, and Getrag 250 5sp trans, and a e36 318 radiator. I have robbed parts from it so those will need to be sourced and there is damage to oil pan see pic’s. This was my old swap and I only drove it a few miles so condition is unknown. Because of the condition I’ll take $200 for all of it.

                    Cmon Sam, buy all that.

                    Or, if you want an M42, I think I have 2 in good shape aside from a bazillion oil leaks at the shop. Both out of 318ti's.

                      Chris,
                      Look on Bimmerforums Rocky Mountain section. Somebody just posted in there looking for one.

                          That is a sweet deal. I wouldn't take a penny less than $200.

                              Heck, I'll pay $225 for it.

                                I pm'd him that I may pass on this one, just because it may need a head gasket, since he said he may have overheated it. Even though it is fairly priced, I will probably hang out and wait for a motor that doesn't need to be taken apart, since I am not in a huge hurry for a swap at the moment, so you guys can go ahead and buy if you like.
