I'm Beginning to See What You All Mean...

I had a work trip in Indianapolis this week and Enterprise rental just got hold of ten new 2011 BMW 328i sedans for their fleet.
Snagging one, I wanted to see what this so-called BMW-hype was all about as I haven't really spent a good amount with an E90.

Ok, so... I'll have to admit, I can begin to see why you guys like your 3-series vehicles so much.
Even with the automatic transmission, and vertially no added options, this was a step up from the Clubman I drive.
The seats are soft on surface level, but narrow and well fitted on the lumber and hips.
Even with the power seat risers, I had a ton of head room for my tall-ass. Astounding!

The 3.0L (at 230hp) isn't slow, but the high RPMs are much preferred; I kept the tranny in DS (sport drive) mode almost the entire time.
But the kicker was driver feedback; it's been a long time since a car restored quick confindence in cornering and chassis feel.
Suspension was firm but not at all jarring, but don't know if it was the seat absorbing more of the shock.
The tires are the same Continential ContiSportContact 3 SSR's on my Clubman, but the 225/45-R17 front and 255/40-R17 doesn't react nearly as twitchy.

Nonetheless, I think I'm seeing why you guys are guru's about such. ;)

      They're great cars, aren't they?

Erik, when I'm back, you're welcome to drive the M3 when it's fixed. You'll like it even better.

Drive an E46 M3. I can't believe that I waited this long to buy one. It's absolutely amazing.

They definitely know how to make a car that 'feels' good.

I was impressed with the fit and finish, and the detail level of the infotainment system.

I think your statement nails it well Chris; there was a oozing 'good' feeling even just sitting in the vehicle.

I still say BMW jumped the shark after the e39 timeframe for 5's, e46 for 3's and e38 for 7's.

                  I just drove a (1 owner) 2006 330i 6-spd with 60k miles.
                  - Runflats caused massive steering wheel wobble (wheels were just fine).
                  - 2nd gear syncro was nearing it's last breath - thanks to BMW maintenance. Every e90 I've ever driven has had a bad 2nd gear syncro.
                  - rear diff has no service drain plug not to mention no LSD

Also, I can't stand the fact that you have to go to the dealer or shop with computer for something as minor as a battery replacement. Don't even get me started with all the lifter ticking issues with N5x engines. (defective oil passages in cylinder head) for 2006- November2008.

Thanks BMW you've helped me decide to drive my e36 till the wheels fall off. When they do, I'll repair it until I find something better. It's amazing how a 20 year old e36, to me, actually drives as well or better than the e90. End rant.

^^ to go along w/ this, BMWs got ugly after the E46, E39, and E38.

except the E90/92 M cars and 335i coupe.

E46 would be the absolute newest BMW I'd spend my money on. I'll emphasize MY money... If someone were gonna loan or give you something newer, doubt you'd say no lol. I liked the 535 I got to poud around in for a few days, fantastic car, but I'd dread when something went wrong... That 5er has been in and out of the shop many times, belongs to a friend.
