Heading up to Pennsylvania for Christmas, need driving tips

Hey everyone, I'm driving up to Pennsylvania, right outside Philly, for Christmas with the E30 and being a Florida boy, I have never driven in snow, and have only seen it twice. Every time my family has gone up there for Christmas, it hasn't snowed, but just in case it does, what's the best mode of attack?

Stock ride heigh, stock basketweaves, and 195/60/14 Ziex Ze-912 for tires. I'm thinking just drive slow and smooth and I should be fine?

Does anyone know the forecast for the week of Christmas??

    Thanks, Peter

Since you're traveling the weight of your luggage should help if it does snow.

Bring a shovel and maybe a small bag of sand if things get weird?

If you are going to stay on non winter tires...Down shift, to slow down - don't break; just like you are driving a boat. If things do get hairy and that doesn't work - hand brake and lot's of gas to steer out of situations...so I've heard. lol jk. It will work worst case.

Not sure if serious or trying to kill op.

Slow and smooth. Test your stopping power when you hit a rough area. Preferably without much speed (40 mph) or others around you. Same thing with accelerating, test it out when alone on road. If you hit ice or a spot where you have no grip, don't slam on brakes or try to turn. Otherwise you will catch grip somewhere and it will not be fun. It's always easier to add speed then lose it! Good luck, be careful.

What he said, but I'd like to add something. The reason you want to be careful with your brakes, is because in the snow you will use all of your available traction trying to stop your forward movement. This will cause you to simply go straight while sliding no matter what direction you turn the wheel. Whereas if you keep off the brakes, you might be able to steer into a safer direction and avoid a collision.

If you are careful and know your car, snow driving can be a very rewarding experience. I personally love it.

Both down shifting and hand brake use can lead to the rear locking up and the ass end sliding out unexpectedly. It's safer to use brakes regularly. Unless you are on some shitty back road and having gobs of fun snow drifting, I wouldn't use either.

Uh. The Ziex 912s are four season tires, nominally. If they're recent and over 50% tread, you'll be fine. Doubly so because at present it's 55F in the Philadelphia area...

I'm part tongue and cheek by suggesting advanced maneuvers. I think context clues make that obvious. You're the one trolling trying to get in a pissing match about it.

He is inexperienced, not easily influenced.

                        Just take is slow OP.

I don't know the op so I can't say how easily influenced he is. No pissing match here.

Troll attempt: Its brake not break. And tongue in cheek not what you typed.

                              I suck.

I've literally misspelled "brake" at least five times in the last few weeks, awful.
