Will an E30 work in snow?

    Hey east coast guys,

I live in Seattle and I may be going to college in NYC this coming fall. I was wondering, as I plan to drive the car up to Old Westbury in the summer, if an E30 will work with east coast weather? Lol. I have a 325is and I was thinking about putting snow tires on, but I am not sure if that's enough. Let me know! Thanks!

Last year was one of the worst winters we've had in a long time. I bought snow tires and had absolutely no issues in my e30. I drove it everyday and never had issues.

When you're driving just take your time and always be patient, but you're from the Northwest, so I'm sure you're comfortable with winter driving.

E30s are beastly in the snow. I drove a vert with no heat from Boston to Vt twice a week last winter and never got stuck. Just make sure you have enough weight in the car.

Good snow tires and weight in the trunk and you'll be good to go. e30's really are great in the snow when properly equipped.

^ what they all said. Get a good set of snow tires (no wider than 185 if possible) and add a bit of weight to your trunk.

A lowered stiffly sprung car is going to suck. Normal rate springs and ride height, COMMON SENSE, ie longer braking distance and snow tires.

It's not the car it's the other F----- people on the road that have no clue. LSD makes a bigger difference as well.

Drove a 71 Dodge Dart in New England snow years ago with bias ply snow tires and did not get stuck, key is 4 snow tires and being smooth.

^agreed with all. Loved my e30 in winter.
However, not sure how NYC treats its roads but beware of road salt, it's hungry stuff. If you must, undercoat and wash frequently.

With snow tires and an lsd I've never had any problem daily driving an e30 in New England. It gets enough traction and if it does break loose on you it's predictable and easy to correct.

Thank you for the replies, everyone! It's good to know that I will be able to keep my pride and joy in college. I was worried it would be too crazy to bring it up, but I definitely am now! Drive up should be nice next summer, then I can get settled with east coast life. Hopefully there are good driving roads - I will be about 40 minutes out from Manhattan, in Old Westbury :D

NYC is flat, so like the others said a good set of snows, and some weight in the trunk, would be all you'll need.

They're a bit harder to find, and might be overkill for the city, but a 325iX with a set of snows would definitely get the job done. Especially if you like to ski/board and plan on heading north to upstate, VT, NH, you'll be able to tear through the worst conditions. I've driven an iX through the last 3 winters here in CT, back and forth to VT most weekends and never got stuck.

Sold my 87e coupe to a guy at work, he mounted 4 snows that came with the car and he loves it in the snow... Takes his front driver off the road and runs the e instead...:p

If you're going to be living in NYC, you should have no problem finding a couple of dead hookers to throw in the trunk for ballast.

IIRC Hunt's Point is a great place for this kind of thing.
