Please don't congratulate us on a win we don't have. This years team doesn't share any members from last years winning team and are not in the same position going into competition as they were. We don't have nearly the testing and driver training time that we had last year and we only have one driver this year with more than just a few hours of drive time under his belt so there is a lot that can go wrong for us at competition.

What can you tell me about your car and what are your goals at competition this year?

as far as FSAE goes from what our advisor tells us all they do is talk about their car all competition, whereas when we arent at the site competing we are drinking and checking out girls.

anyhow, congrats on your forth coming victory. As long as french canadians dont win im cool with it.

in south carolina laval won the competition, and they won the raffle for the generator. it was rigged (but their car hauls major ass)

That's a good attitude to have. We went to competition in '08 expecting to really be at the top, and we had the car to do it!! 55 horsepower in a car that was only 400 pounds with a suspension design that completely boggled my mind.

Yet when we got there we couldn't communicate our work to the judges and got completely looked over in all static competitions. We started to do some work in the dynamic events with a chance to salvage a good finish, yet little things (a broken oil pump shaft and overheated home sensor) kept us from getting a good (possibly top 3?) finish at competition in California.

Is Trenton still working with the team? Lori and Nick are gone, right? I was back there a few weeks ago and it was kinda sad to see Lori's face on the graduation wall. They really used her as the face of OSU SAE, haha. For good reason ;-)

first off, lol at driver training. whats that?

We placed 18th in SC, largely based on cost and design scores, and finishing the endurance race (fewest laps in the top 20). Our goal going into this year was (as it always is) to finish the endurance race as last year we didnt get more than a handful of laps in both competitions we went to. We spent some time figuring out our car more between competitions. since SC we (I) have figured out how to turn it at all speeds. We did some accel tuning to get us up in at least the top 20 (hopefully). We are hoping to improve on SC performance and break into the top 10 for the first time in several years. We also won the "Ultimate Team" award in SC, we assume its for lending nuts/bolts/tubing/sheetmetal/rod ends/welder time to other teams that needed it (we had a line formed to use our tig), we will have absolutely nothing with us in WA so hopefully our efforts will be repayed.

North Carolina State University by the way.

Wait a second, 08 only had 55hp with a 4cyl and weighed a massive 400lbs? Thats as heavy as our baja car and you can roll that thing down a hill end over end and still drive away.

09 weighed in at 307 and 2010 weighs 309 right now and they expect about 320 with the under tray and other bits the car still lacks. I think the dyno numbers were about 48hp for both.

We still have Trenton, Patton and Murray working on the formula car this year, plus a few really dedicated underclassmen. (Delaney and Takaro). Nick and Lori are both gone now.

I know it weighed in at 401 pounds at competition. The HP numbers might have been higher, I don't really remember. Probably closer to 65 though. Just the engine change saved us a lot of weight. Not only just engine weight, but the consequential reduction of size in all the drivetrain parts for a smaller output. Then the weight loss from using a monocoque...

I knew Chris and Bill we still there, as well as Jeff and Trevor tearing it up as team captains. I spoke with Trevor when I was in the shop the other week.

                      For the official results

Looks like RIT got the top spot with OSU coming in 4th. I'm assuming NC325iC you go to NCSU? They came in 10th.

Living Legend, looks like you guys kinda struggled in the static events there. That's definitely a place where experience comes into play. Any of you guys going to other competitions?

And I'd like to point out that Formula Michigan was two weeks ago with the Oregon State on top. Here's the story:

This is our only event this season, New York is the water event and its going to be a cold day in hell when OSU goes to a water competition.

Yeah, we fell short of design finals by one point, and we got screwed (35) on our design report that is very similar to previous years that have gotten 49 or 50 out of 50. We always do poorly in cost because we keep it honest so its hard to score more points there without a major redesign.

as for dynamic we did poorly in the rock crawl because of stupid mistakes. we took the first run and got stuck and instead of going back and fixing reverse so that we could do better the second time we just went for it and got stuck again. We were right at the end of the most difficult obstacle where we got stuck and having reverse working would have gotten us arcoss the finish line. It also dried up later in the day and we took both our runs in the morning because it was supposed to rain in the afternoon and never did.

Overall fourth isn't bad but it doesn't feel like the best we could do with our car. Oh well, Baja is over now and I finally have time to work on my E30 again.

we missed a plaque in design by 1.1 points (design finals bonus) got 5th in endurance 5 seconds behind OSU, best finish we've had in almost 10 years if not the best finish weve had ever. Didnt even get a score in maneuverability, only posted 5 points in rock crawl. all in all a great weekend for our program. I dont know how you can stand living up there with a 20 degree change when the sun goes behind a cloud, ill take my steamy hot southeastern weather.

Nice job at competition and nice meeting you (although I don't know which one of those guys you were). Are you a senior or will you be competing again next year? What are next years plans with the car?

We had a less experienced team this year but I think for 2011 and 2012 we will have a winning team once again, and I'm hoping they take the 2010 back to competition next year and give it another try at getting a podium finish.

holy shit that Laval car was fast. On Wednesday when I first got a chance to take a look at everyones cars and I saw what Laval brought I couldn't believe that that ugly little car won the South Carolina competition but goddamn is that thing quick on those straights.
