Asking for a friend, his car is a 1997 and he needs to know if they will hook it up to a tailpipe sniffer or if they just hook a scanner into it and get a pass or fail readout? If anybody knows lemme know because if its just a scanner ill reset his check engine light and he should be good to go right?

well the wife's 97 camry was just a read of the obdII port so would think your friends will be also..
as far as just resetting the light no ,it will be failed if the readiness monitors have not run and passed which can take up to three days on some cars to have complete enough drive cycles (Evap usually being the hardest to get reset) ie: complete cooldowns and the right conditions during regular driving to run the tests.....so if he has a problem that will not allow readiness monitors to run or reset to pass it will have to be repaired to allow a passing test

My friend with an OBD2 integra says they plug it into the code reader.

1985-1995(12/95 to be exact) is the siffer (note 25 years and older are exempt)
1996-up obd2 plug and scan
