I'm really worried about an I1098 here in WA. It's an income tax just for the really wealthy. It won't affect me immediately, but it's just going to start the ball rolling on WA having income tax for everyone.

Yup. Voting against that... though I wish we could cut property tax and remove B&O tax on businesses with out having to start a state income tax.

I never got my ballot in the mail. I hate to be "that guy", but given how so many politicians have commercials hating on their opponents, it makes me want to ignore all of them and not vote.

I do know the importance of voting on those other measures, but I'm almost certain that the majority of Portland thinks along the same lines as I do when it comes to that stuff.

I voted to R where I thought it would be best ... no income tax, not with a state sales tax that is out of control. Snohomish county has the highest in the state of WA! Also I agree that state run liquor stores are stupid. I'd rather have better enforcement and free enterprise.

I see that one de-regulates and one changes regulation? Is that the difference? Can't hurt to approve both of them, right?

It would be political suicide to enact a huge tax on the middle/lower class. The money has to come from somewhere, income tax is much more fair then sales tax which is highly regressive. We should eliminate sales tax altogether and move to income tax in all honesty. The initiative will also help reduce the tax burdon on the lower/middle class by lowering their property tax. Meh.. Everyone wants change but nobody is willing to change. Income tax > sales tax, lets get the ball rolling!

I'm not so sure about this one. Oregon has a 100% income tax-based revenue system. It's great when the economy is up and people are making money, low unemployment, etc. But when things take a turn for the worse state revenues plummet, leading to huge budget deficits.

Yes sales taxes are regressive, regrettably. But they also provide a much more stable source of revenue. Income taxes are highly cyclical and can really exaggerate the whole 'boom or bust' thing. Salem has looked at going with a hybrid system of both, lowering the income tax while imposing a small sales tax (~3-4%) but Oregonians have always voted it down.

A hybrid system would be my preference, but then again that just makes 2 types of taxes they can raise :-|
