There are some cool things about the n54, it's an all aluminum motor with cast iron sleeves which is killer for boost. The electrical is very straight forward, which makes it. A good swap candidate as well. It's modern in an old car and I dig that. The 335i in our family has 80k on it with regular maintenance and no issues have arose.
The bad:
Carbon build up after 30-50k
Turbos seem to die after 70-100k
The motor is in a 2 ton chassis.
Boost at 1200 rpm is nice, the gas mileage is good, a lot of people pushing stock internals with zero issues.
N54's with just a jb tune are fast, and then you add rb turbos, methanol, and a front mount plus a 2500 pound chassis and things start to change.. Including the tires..
Edit: more expensive to run an s54 properly and an n54 can be found much cheaper!
