Sport Driving Tech Session, April 2, 425 Motorsports in Bellevue

    Sport Driving Tech Session

    When: Saturday, April 2
    Location: 425 Motorsports, Bellevue

Hour 1: BMW Driving School Information & Safety Gear Overview
    Hour 2: Amateur Racing 101

Join us on Saturday, April 2 at 10:00AM as we kick off the sport driving season with a fun and informative tech session at the recently opened 425 Motorsports in Bellevue. 425 Motorsports is a retail store in Bellevue that caters and specializes in automotive driving and racing equipment. This will be a two-part tech event.

As an E30 owner, you have one of the greatest track cars ever made. If you are not going to the track or Autocross, you are missing a great opportunity to become a better driver and have a lot of fun!

BMW Driving Events Overview and Safety Gear Tech Session

Hour 1 will be geared towards our outstanding BMW Club driving programs held at Pacific Raceways. Participating in these events is a great way to become a better driver and fully understand and enjoy the features of your BMW in a safe, controlled environment. Driving Events Chair Rick Gulstrom will explain the Car Control Clinics and the advanced HPDE program. For those already planning to attend these programs this year, we’ll have information about how to pick your helmet and other safety gear.

    Amateur Road Racing 101

After a short break, Hour 2 will be led by BMW Racing SIG leader Wes Hill and be about how to get into local amateur road racing. The various local sanctioning bodies will be reviewed, and pros and cons of renting versus owning a race car will be covered. A PRO3 car will be on display to use as a show and tell for how a typical amateur level race car is prepped. Road Racing is not the only form of competitive motorsport however and BMW Club President Michelle Miller will provide information on opportunities for local autocrossing too.

Of special interest to all will be an interesting presentation by Fred Wright on an exciting new race track being developed in Shelton, Washington. Also of interest will be a short presentation about DirtFish Rally School; the new rally school in Snoqualmie. TC Motorsports from Auburn will also be on hand with tips on suspension tuning.

The event is free to attend, but an RSVP to me is appreciated to help us plan for seating. When RSVP’ing, please provide me with your name, type of BMW, and the number of guests you will be bringing with you. You can RSVP to me at: Lance@Richertnet.com.

425 Motorsports and some of the other presentors will be providing some raffle prizes to give away that day. 425 Motorsports will also have special day of event discounts!

    The Presenters

    Our presentors will include:

    Rick Gulstrom

Rick has been a “Bimmer” guy since he bought his first BMW, a new 1999 M3 and joined the BMW Club in 2000. Since then, purchased another BMW (2006 325i) as a commuter car and uses the ’99 M3 as a dedicated track car. Rick started racing in the 70’s and for two years has raced PRO3 and EIP classes of conference racing renting Greg Miller’s PRO3 car. Rick chairs the BMW Club's driving program. During his tenure with the BMW club, Rick has also served as Membership Chair, Vice President, President, Judge for Concours, and Driving Instructor for 10 years. Rick enjoys not only the cars (BMWs), but also all of the people he has met over the last eleven years.

    Carlo Sparacio

Carlo Sparacio is an owner of TC Motorsports, a local motorsports company that helps its clients drive smarter, not harder. Carlo has worked for auto manufacturers as a facilitator and driver in precision high performance driving demonstrations, production car and race car testing, and racing. He has been involved in numerous kinds of motorsport including GRAND-AM and SCCA Pro racing, club racing, HPDE track days, drifting, autocross, open road racing, and drag racing as an instructor, driver, and team manager. At TC Motorsports, Carlo helps clients who own all types of high performance and race vehicles make educated and smart decisions about upgrades for the types of driving and events they do.

    Bob Mearns

Bob started high performance driving in 2003 in BMWCCA PSR track events, and started racing in ICSCC in 2004. He earned a senior license in 2005 and has accrued championship points in PRO3 each year since. Since 2008 he has been an officer of ICSCC, and is looking forward to mentoring new racers in his new role as ICSCC License Director.

    Michelle Miller

Michelle Miller is the current President of the BMW CCA Puget Sound Region Chapter and has been active in the BMW club for five years. She is also the Bremerton Sports Car Club Registration Co-Chair and Novice Autocross School Chair. She has been autocrossing four about four years.

    Dan Reiss

Dan Reiss has over 12-years in the motorsports industry working as a General Manager and recently opening 425 Motorsports in Bellevue, WA and a satellite store in Snoqualmie, WA. Dan enjoys working on his own car projects and is an avid car enthusiast. Dan is knowledgable about most cars, high performance upgrades, auto-racing and race equipment. This makes Dan Reiss and 425 Motorsports a great resource for motorsports equipment, parts and accessories.

    Wes Hill

Wes started driving with the local BMW club 20 years ago at their HPDE’s and after all this time, still cannot find a better way to spend his off work hours! A couple years driving with the club turned into actually putting on the events and holding a chair position on the BMW Board. That experience lead to teaching professionally with the local Racing School. Wes has taken that experience, added it to the fun he has helping people improve their high speed driving skills, and am now a “professional driver” doing work directly for the auto manufacturer’s. Wes has raced for the last 15 years locally and have run professional events including the Rolex Daytona 24 Hours. What he enjoys most though is still helping local amateurs get started on their own driving career

    Fred Wright

Fred loves to drive period. He is a car guy that is lucky enough to be able to work in the industry he loves. Fred spent the last 7 years as CEO/ President The Driver Training Group parent company of SWERVE Driving School. Now he is helping to develop the Ridge Motorsport Park in Shelton. For fun Fred races in PRO3, races a1969 Alfa Romeo GTV and instructs other drivers on the skills of high performance driving. His daily driver is a Mini Clubman.

      CCC and HPDS descriptions

Full info is available at the High Performance Driving Schools section of the BMW Club's web site, but here are the sections that explain the Car Control Clinics and High Performance Driving Schools.

Costs have been lowered this year. The CCC is $95 and the HPDS is $195. These are full day programs.

Dates for both the CCC and HPDS are:

      April 28
      June 10
      August 12
      September 9

Both the CCC and HPDS are held at Pacific Raceways in Kent. The forecast for these 4 days is sunny and mild temps. :)

      Car Control Clinic - CCC

The objective of the Car Control Clinic (CCC) is to make the student a safer and more confident driver. The driver will have a blast and have a whole new appreciation for their BMW! If you have ever been curious why they call these 'The Ultimate Driving Machines’--spend a day with us and find out what German Engineering is all about!

The CCC begins with a series of drill stations. Each station is designed to focus on a specific car control skill, offering students the opportunity to gain practical skills which they can immediately transfer to their every day driving. Stations include slalom, braking, skid pad, and a handling oval. Instructors will ride with students and coach them at each drill station. Drivers will learn the limits of their car and how to keep their car within those limits.

During the afternoon, drivers who are interested will have the opportunity to be exposed to the road racing track surface at Pacific Raceways.

Attending a Car Control Clinic is a prerequisite for those interested in attending a High-Performance Driving School, This is an interim step as you build your skill level.

      High-Performance Driving Schools - HPDS

Drivers who have not driven Pacific Raceways should not miss this opportunity. Pacific Raceways at 2.25 miles is very challenging and exciting to drive. The track offers driving variety, from elevation change, to hairpin turns, to a challenging chicane. It has been described as a mini Nurburgring.

Our High-Performance Driving Schools are designed as a way for drivers to continue their skill building. The intent behind these events is to offer further driver-skills education. These events are skill-building days to enhance the car control training. A drivers learning does not stop with the first school, but rather accumulates over time with each additional event attended. As with all our schools, these events are fully staffed with an ensemble of instructors available for our drivers all day – you cannot beat that! We are fortunate to have a consistent, dedicated group of instructors that donate their time all year so drivers can pick their favorites and learn from them all year.

To be eligible, drivers need to have attended our car control clinic (CCC) or an equivalent program. Email the Driving Events Chair if you have any questions on eligibility.

I've personally been blessed that I started lapping while in college in the mid 80's, driving an E21. I've since gone through a couple of BMWs and 25 years later still enjoy driving my E30 PRO3 car. The driving is great, and the friends you make in the paddock is equally valued.

Your BMW does not need to be highly modified at all to be a competent car at the track. Upkeep in basic maintenance and fresh fluids is all you need. At the end of the day you and your BMW will have a big smile on your face.

You do not need to be a BMW Club member to attend the Sport Driving Tech Session at 425 Motorsports. The event is free, but an RSVP to me is appreciated so we can plan for seating. Let me know what kind of BMW you have, and if you will be bringing any guests.

The April 2 meeting is free. But an RSVP as noted helps us with planning for seating. Also, 425 Motorsports will have donuts, coffee etc on hand. I told them to get good donuts, LOL.

You do not have to own a BMW to attend the tech session.

You do not have to own a BMW to do the Car Control Clinic (but you must be a member of the BMW Club to do the CCC)
