why cant I bleed my cluth?

So I have the engine and tranny back in. I put on a new slave cylinder and when I went to bleed it the clutch pedal just goes to the floor and doesn't return unless I pull the pedal back by hand. Any idea what is going on?

Before installing it in the transmission, I usually pump the piston on the slave a few times to bleed any air in there (lord that's a terrible innuendo). Then install and bleed like normal and you should be good.
