Graffiti on large shop wall. Permits Artist?

    Hey there,

Our sign shop has a large outside outside wall that always gets tagged. I am wondering if anyone knows if a permit is needed to have an artist paint a huge car related scene on this wall.

My hope is if we paint an awesome mural that the guys tagging the space will not go over the other artisit work.

Any ideas if a permit is needed for such a thing?

    Thanks,

    Tyler

I think you would have to contact the Zoning Board or similar type people in your area and see what laws pertain to signage.

It seams to me that you can paint your property how ever you like. After all it is your wall. It is not like you need to ask the city if you can paint your wall bright green.
I guess asking never hurts though.

You really don't know much. In some places, signage is limited to sizes, dimensions, and color schemes. Some places require hearings on the sign placement, and approval. In a place like Seattle, WA. I assume there are some rules...

Just don't tell them it's for your business as "advertising" and you shouldn't have many issues. Use words like, "urban artwork" and the like.

Yep. My mother is a state farm agent in Seattle and she has a hell of a time dealing with her signing issues.

I'm a graffiti artist and I'm here to tell you, some asshole is going to paint over it anyway. Just not right away. Also, I've painted a few shops and as far as I know you can paint whatever you want on it as long as it's not advertising your shop name.. That costs monayyy!!!

i never said i know much. ;) how ever i have done a few pieces of wall art for people on their private property, and i know we never asked permission from san francisco. never had any problems ether.
signage and art are two different things. if he wants a sign/advertisement it might be different then a artistic rendering of a car or something.

not necessarily. there is an unspoken rule amongst most "street artists" that they will not go over other peoples work, unless they are in a direct "battle" with them.
some of the wall art i have done has been specifically put up to discourage people from tagging on the wall, and %95 of the time it works.
there will always be those 18 year old kids who think they are bad asses and write on everything no matter what. they get their asses kicked though.

This was my thought. Maybe I will find an artist and have them try it. If the city goes crazy we will just paint over it. The building needs to be painted regardless.

                              Thank you,
