    HVLP Gun and Compressor

Who's got an HVLP gun I can borrow/buy off ya? As for the compressor, I'm looking to borrow a 50+ gallon compressor. I can pay ya for it's use. Even better, if you have some clear garage space it would simplify my life but, I have no problem doing this in my garage. Just need to clean it out a bit, heh.

And soon'ish. I'm hoping to have my car finished with prep and ready for me to spray it in a few days. Would like to tackle this in 2 or so. Thanks in advance!

If you were closer, I'd loan you my Seta. Have you painted a car previously?

I have back in HS with an amazing body/mechanical/paint guru teacher. We sprayed his '57 Shoebox in Metallic Flake Lime Green and pearl cream white.

But, it's been a long while since I was behind a genuine spray gun. The last car I really painted was that roller paint job I was working on when I first met you, Keith ;)

I was impressed with what you were doing. I work on big buck cars but like the budget/DIY approach better.
Laying paint isn't too difficult, just keep a wet edge. More important is the prep before. And make sure it is clean before you start spraying.

chris, i'm not trying to steer your thread off track, but i have GOT to ask....

i'm trying to paint my whole car too but i haven't been able to find a decent place. i am extremely close to getting a maaco paint job but i really don't want to. do you think we could paint our cars together? i'll bring my car to your garage or we can line my garage with plastic and shoot our cars (i have alot of garage space....i have 5 garage doors/spaces haha. you can teach me and show me how. of course i'll be compensating you along the way with the materials and whatnot. we could do half and half on the material costs.

          what do you think?

Any recommendations on thinner? Will mineral spirits suffice?

As for surface prep and body work it's looking good. Nearly every door ding is removed. For almost 580,000 miles on the body (all that I could track down on the vin of the body) it's got surprisingly no rust issues beyond surface.

Ha! Yeah, the roller paint job on that '88 325is actually turned out really nice. I mean, really "Fire Engine Red" but got tons of compliments. The girl I was dating at the time was surprised and I was butt hurt at her surprise ;)

The final Polish on bit took out any of the dimpling/orange peel left behind by the roller. It was very, very labor intensive. The idea behind my latest project was originally roller paint. But Satin black just isn't agreeing with the rollers.

This actually isn't a bad idea if you want to learn. The biggest issue is my schedule. I work Grave yard for 40 + hours a week and I have maybe Saturdays open to actually do stuff as Friday get's eaten by the shift/lag time and Sunday I go back to work in the evening so sleep is paramount.

You're more than welcome as I get closer to coming by and learning a few things about bondo and the like. I've got 3 gallons of it. My sanding supplies have diminished as a water leak destroyed an entire box of car sand paper but I should be able to replenish it shortly.

I'm also recovering (I hope) from a pretty serious lung infection. Kept me on my ass for 2 weeks almost so, the actual prep/painting is a tad on hold until I can catch up on some medicals bills and the like.

              P.S.

Do not Maaco unless you have $2,500 to drop on one of their higher end paint jobs. I've talked with Maaco about painting my car honestly. It's less than a higher end shop and definitely not a bad option but don't ever expect a good paint job for less than $2,000 at the lowest. If you go with one of their cheaper sprays it will look like shit within a year and you wont be satisfied.

Black, even satin, shows flaws readily due to how it refracts light. Lacquer thinner to clean the gun. Reducer to thin the paint. There are different ones used based on what the temperature is. (it will either speed up or slow down the "flash" time.

Got'cha. I remember that from HS. I'll be painting in my garage and waiting for a mellow 70 degree day.
