I am so confused by the above statements.. my head is about to explode.
The bothersome part of it is "overheating but it does once approaching highway speeds"..
That has me worried, the engine should be easier to keep cool at highway speeds (more air flowing over the radiator then at idle.) If you get a chance to look at it, look at the tailpipe while it's warmed up and running, see if there is excess condensation or dripping water out, could be a sign of head gasket or cracked head. Also, pop the oil cap and give it a whiff, see if there is excess fuel fumes from the crankcase (blow-by..) Those are just a couple quick test you can do. In the old days, we would pop the radiator cap off and look for bubbles in the coolant (cracked head or head gasket) but because of the coolant system design on BMW, not possible.
When buying a used car, use your senses.. smell for burning fluids (brake, oil, water), listen for strange sounds (water pump bearings, engine bearings, misfires), and feel for abnormal things (The engine is a rotating mass so anything - misfires, bad compression , bad valves - will either be at crank speed (RPM) or valve train speed (RPM/4).
Just some tips from some one who has bought and destroyed many, many cars..
