    ahhhh m50 engine swap

Doing my swap right now, and trying to place the engine onto my e28 535i mounts. Can't get the engine to match up right. I'm in lynnwood at performance motors right now. If anyone is local and has done the swap and could come lend some advice or reply back to this it would be appreciated. I've read the the comprehensive dohc thread and can't seem to find the answer.

    Thanks
    Mick

Get the trans pushed all the way up into the tunnel and get the motor all the way back into the bay. Keep the bolts on the mounts holding on by like 2 threads so you can angle them to fall into the subframe (or the other way around)

the trans if off, were just dropping the engine and going to add the trans from the bottom later (benefits of having a lift). If I line up the passenger side mount, the drivers side is off by an inch. We were keeping the mounts loose so we could have some play, but they still aren't matching up well. I'm baffled ha

I just did the same thing last night and it took me almost an hour to drop the engine in ! I had the transmission mated to the engine tho.

I had the engine on a hoist and the car on the lift then I jacked up the rear of the transmission up with a floor jack, then kept shaking in it around until I got the passenger side in, then the other side didn't take as long,do not screw the mounts until your engine is seated. I'd also install the transmission while the engine is out, since the two screws on the top are a nightmare !

Good job. I always underestimate the pain in the ass of getting the 24v motors on their mounts.

This. One of those things that adds an unexpected hour or more to your build time

Hey did you have to flip the e28 mounts for the transmission to sit right ? After I finished installing everything the transmission didn't look right and couple of members here told me I should flip the mounts.

I tried that and they still didn't work right. So we re ordered some mounts from a 528, they look like the ones of this page, http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=123482 and the engine sat right in. With these mounts we were able to use the stock mounts (that came off the e30) for the zf tranny from the m50. Unfortunately, we had to cut the shift linkage, shorten slightly and re attach at a 5-7 degree angle, so that when shifting, the shifter wouldn't come in contact with the center console.

How come everyone is saying the 535i mounts work fine ? I removed the engine again today and flipped the mounts, it kind of fixed it but I still don't like it, I'm going to buy some of these mounts you mentioned. And thank god my shifter carrier is almost centered and I didn't have to cut or weld
