    Thoughts on this car?

1991 318i with 167k. Radiator fan is the only issue I see. When I spoke with the guy he said he actually sourced a new fan and wants to replace it before selling it. It was running hot last summer without the fan so he parked it so as not to overheat it.

    What do you think?

If the radiator fan is out and he hasn't immediately replaced it, then it's likely the motor could have been overheated at some point. I'd quiz him on it.

sounds like he's referring to the auxiliary fan for the a/c
Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!

Sorry, yeah. On further conversation with him, he says it's condenser fan. He's found one local and wants to replace it before selling car. Still willing to let it go at asking price with the repair, which seems fair to me. I was really concerned about overheating with potential cooling system issue, but feeling better about it now. Will still have it gone over.

If he'll pop a new one in, let him. You have to pull the front bumper and valence to get to it. PITA.

M42 isn't a motor for a newbie. They can be really reliable, but BMW's design wasn't the greatest.

I'd plan on putting about $500 and a weekend's worth of work into it immediately. Or just drive it until it breaks. M42s aren't that expensive anymore.

My thinking is that 4 doors fits more whores. That's all. Because all I think about is whores.

It looks pretty good. Spend a few bucks easy fix on a few items and you have a great daily.

Well, sure. I hope we're all using the honor system, here ;)

And, KenC, what especially makes the M42 a bad engine for noobs? I am, btw, a noob at wrenching my own car. I like the idea of an M42 as a relatively fuel effecient daily, and I figure I'll just learn about stuff as it comes up, as long as it's deemed reliably drivable by a ppi.

On that note, any ideas about a good indy mechanic in or around McMinnville to do a ppi? I know where I like to go in Eugene.
