I want to add new gear oil to my trans but the only 17mm allen I could find after checking 4 stores is a hex key & I can't manage to break the check/fill plug lose... Any tips and/or tricks

Use a pipe or some sort of breaker bar. I wouldn't apply heat. Could risk heating the sealant that seals the box to the bell housing and cause it to slowly leak the fluid.

To get the plug moving give it a shot of PB blaster. Then use a short length of pipe on the hex key and crank on it. Some light taps with a hammer on the key will break any rust/oxidation and help it move.

Fwiw, the best way to get the fluid into the tranny is a kerosene pump from Ace hardware. Just cut the intake tube to fit your gear oil bottle and pump away.

        It's a throwaway item at 5 bucks.

I second all of these statements.

The plugs aren't exactly close to any seals. Applying moderate heat will not affect anything. Didn't say to throw it in a fire but sometimes a small blow torch makes the difference between stripping a drain plug and cracking it lose.

So I've given up for the night... I have to bum a ride to work again tomorrow & I'm thinking about killing myself...

But seriously I have the 17mm hex key and have sprayed more pb spray then needed for anything and the plug just looks like it's rounding out...

I can see where the fluid was leaking from the master and slave cylinders and know I need to replace those as well but anybody wanna make a buck & get this plug out in my car port so I can get some great oil in the trans and shift again? I dont care if you break the plug up can get a new one

if all you have is a hex key, then also get a large close end 17 mm wrench and put it on the key.

The actual bmw tool is a 17 mm wrench with a hex key welded in its eye.

also use liquid wrench. and then finally a cheater bar.

the one on the differential gives you much more room

There have also been people who have used a bolt with a 17 mm head, and put 2 nuts on it ( the bolt has to be like 1 inch long) and then put the head in the plug and turn wuith a 17 mm wrench.
