Where to start? I own two BMW’s and wish I owned like 10 more. I have a 1990 325i coupe and a 1993 325is coupe. I have owned the E30 since September 2008. I bought it in Portland. It was completely stock and was in pretty good shape for being 18 years old. It was in Ashland, OR before I bought it. I was still in high school when I got it, so I was the typical poor high school kid working a meager job; meaning I couldn’t do the things I wanted to with it. I kept the car the same all of the way until now. It was my daily driver and it took me to high school and back, college and back, and work and back. It was the most reliable car and I love it to death.
Unfortunately, it succumbed to owner neglect in March 2012. I didn’t have the money at the time to do the necessary maintenance it needed. Well, I didn’t have the money to take it to a shop, and I didn’t have the resources to do it myself. On March 27, 2012, on my way home from my former job, my car died. I was driving down the road and it shut off on me. The dash lights were all on, so I knew something was wrong. I was able to coast into the parking lot of whole foods. Let me just tell you, the people who shop at whole foods are dicks. No one would help me and they acted like I was inconveniencing them by having my car break.. Anyways, I tried to get my car to start; no luck. Eventually, my step father was able to come and tow me back to my mother’s house. From that day on, every day has been a work in progress to get it back up and running.
What happened: about four inches of timing belt teeth came off of the belt. Therefore, the timing slipped and a valve jammed up into a rocker arm and broke it. It was the fifth cylinder that this happened in.
After I realized what had happened, I dove in and started tearing apart the top end. I eventually got it taken apart and sent the head off to a machine shop. While I was waiting for it at the machine shop, I started to take apart the other necessary things. Radiator, fan clutch, water pump, etc. All that is left in the engine bay is the bottom half of the engine.
I ended up moving up to Redmond from the Portland area, so the E30 rebuild is on hold for now. Unless, my boyfriend (AbeSonic) finishes it for me for Christmas! However, if it doesn’t get done by then, I am saving the money to finish it myself! :)
The E36 I picked up in April 2012 is my current daily driver. I enjoy it, but it does not to compare to the love and joy that I feel for my E30; and I cannot wait to see the plans that I have for my E30 to unfold and a realization in the future! :)
Overall, I am becoming more active on R3V, and I just moved up north, so I do not know anyone. It would be nice to see who is in the Redmond/Seattle area. :)
