Need Help!!! Fuel Guage Gone Mad!!!

I have an 88 iX and recently the rpm/mpg gauges stopped working, but the miles per hour Guage, as well as the temp and fuel gauges have worked consistently. Not sure if its the cold weather or running a low tank this last time but my Guage for 'fuel' now doesn't register. Drive it to the station and added 10$ in to see if it would move from beyond the empty mark but it stayed stuck on R. The all if the sudden it started flying anywhere from full to half then empty the back and forth all over the place. Seems to almost mimic the revs on the motor and randomly Dance back and forth making me wonder what's wrong with it????

Now I know I need a new cluster probably but it there something I can do to get by or do I need to just replace it? Anyone have a cluster for sell hopefully around 200k on the clock?? Or can anyone help or can tell me what's going on? Could it be from the frosty weather or is there any repairing I could do to salvage my current cluster? Thanks for the help guys

I have a cluster with a broken case but the gauges all work. 147K on the clock. Swapping everything over takes awhile but it is not difficult. $20

You need to replace your fuel sending unit (under rear seat on passenger side) to fix your fuel gauge.

To fix your tach, you need to replace either the coding plug (right below the tach at the front of the cluster,) however, if that doesn't work, then you just change the whole tach itself.

Seems weird that it just stopped working (it does happen, though.) You might try looking through your fuse box and seeing if any fuses have popped, too. There is one that powers the tach, among a few other things.

      Good luck!

The sender is pretty easy to test so I would test that first and then when that checks fine fix the cluster. IE its probably the cluster but check the sender first.

Hey I'll try the sensor and see what happens. Thanks Austin

Pipes- I'd definitely be down to pick that cluster up in a week or two, I'm getting ready to move so I've got limited funds right now but ASAP, I'll hit you up. Thanks

So I found the fuse number 21 had blown,(explains why my stereo coded out, trunk light, door lights, and glove box lights all stopped working recently) So anyways, I replaced the fuse and everything works now even the mpg/RPM gauges started working. The only problem is the fuel gauge still trips out(jumping back and forth and displaying the wrong info). What to check next? The sender? Where is that located?? (trunk, gas tank, under the rear seat???)
