I like Craigslist, but not for electronics. Sometimes you find good parts or some good tools there. If its for used electronics I go to a legit store.. Best buy, Walmart etc..
i buy all kinds of crap off CL, I go with friends, and check everything B4 I leave. I sell all kinds of stuff on there as well. Go with friends for a sale as well.
So far I've been fine when buying and selling on CL. Got a great deal on a roof rack from a really nice guy on there. There's a lot I wouldn't get from it though(I.E electronics)
What bothers me about CL is the lack of motivation of most of the sellers on it

i love CL because it is one giant classifieds website that seems to hold the monopoly of classifieds websites, but nearly 95% of people on CL are drooling morons, I have just learned to expect nothing and don't take the seller's word on ANYTHING. Buy the object as if you were buying it from a monkey (who obv can's speak or communicate).
I sell pretty much anything on CL within two days time. Just have to know how to market to people. In terms of buying items, you just need to ask certain questions to sellers to know if it's even worth your time.
For computer items I usually ask for a timestamped screen shot of the product working in the system. If the seller is willing to take 5 minutes out to do that, it's usually a good buy.
At this point you're looking at taking a lost for the iMac. Sucks he swindle you like that...
I've had success buying a computer off of Craigslist. It was an Mac Mini and the dude was cool with me dragging a monitor into a starbucks and plugging it all up and testing it. Took 20 minutes of the guy's time, and he was super friendly and honest.
The world is still full of cheaters, and depending on the item, cheaters are more willing to cheat you. "you need an iphone aye? And can afford it? I'll cheat you!"
"Oh you want a baby crib? Well shit I won't rip you off over that"
The hardest part for me is knowing when to walk away, and then actually doing it. I'm too nice, and don't like wasting people's time or I feel guilty.
Craigs list is a great place to get stuff though, and is about the only classified section worth looking at any more. If you're buying something that two different people will see a difference in value over, you get a good deal. That's why furniture is such a bargain. People can't use spare couches.

I'm looking for a Lachssilber Passenger Fender and Hood. PM if you have one or both to sell!
OP no offense, your part to blame for your mishap. You should of tested it before your bought it. I've had nothing but good fortune when it comes Craigslist. In that last month or so. I've found someone that comes once a week and picks up my cardboard fo free. Also, found someone who come and collects pallets in exchange for moonshine. I'm all about the bartering aspect of Craigslist. I've gotten a couple sweet guns on trade for some old Porsche wheels.

Hell yeah, it's legit. I do a lot of home brew and she saw some of my home brew stuff. We got to talking and was telling me about her still she has and how I was interested in getting into distilling. She has come twice since and every time she brings a jar. It's fucking potent, it's gotta be mixed with something.
