WTB: Gauge cluster for 83 318

Would like VDO, but anything that actually works would be an improvement. My gas gauge, and tach don't work at all.

I have a US cluster from an '84 318i. It worked fine when I parted the car out in 2011 but has been in a box since. Tabs are not broken.

Can ship it tomorrow for you.

Gauges not working is common on our cars. I was in your shoes a few months ago and I researched the cause of my gauges not working and fixed the cluster I had instead of buying a known working one that might stop working 6 months later.

There are many reasons why our gauges stop working but most likely the reason your speedo is not working is due to the gears on the back of it. To verify it remove cluster and look on the back of the speedo to verify if you have a VDO or Motometer. Do not think that just because your cluster says VDO or Motometer on the front that you have that particular one. I've seen cluster that say VDO on the front and have Motometer gauges.

Once you have figured out what you have go to www.garagistic.com and order the gear(s) you need.

For the tach I would replace the SI board. Contact Gregs///M. He can maybe tell you how to test your board but even if he can't he would be able to get you a replacement SI board with new batteries.
If your gauges still don't work then I would start looking for breaks in the solder on the main board.

The Speedo is the only gauge that works.

The SI board was really corroded, so I am sure it has problems...

The needles are bent and loose, so I really think a whole 'new' cluster is the way to go this time.

        karmatose, you got mail.
