    What shou;d i do?

So i bought a 1991 318i. M42 motor. Car stood for probly 10 years. Brought it home, changed the fuel pump and fired her up. She runs rough. Stuttering and sputtering for a few minutes, then idles well when it warms up.Second time i tried to start it, 2 days later, it took a while but sounded like it almost had a piston slap until about the 50th crank. 3rd time, piston slap sound sounded like it was there for 2 cranks. Starts up fine now but still sputters at cold. Gas tank had RUST GALORE in it so maybe the bad gas could be something.

My question is, i bought a bunch of new stuff. Waterpump, thermostat, spark plugs, intake boot, new coolant, new oil, new tranny fluid, new diff fluid, new intake hoses, mess under intake mod, TB and intake mani gaskets, valve cover gasket and typical tune up stuff. Should i bother fixing the motor up with 212k miles or should i find a better one with low miles. You could imagine that standing for +/- 10 years, hoses are cracked, motor is nasty looking.

Engine is toast and not worth your time or money fixing....finding another m42 will take some time...guess it was a 700 car after all

If I had the money, I'd definitely do a e36 swap. Whether it be m50, m52 or s50. I just don't have the money. it runs good when its running. Just thinking whether its worth putting the work into changing this stuff.

Why do you suppose engine is toast? after running for a minute or two and warming up, it runs great. I took it out for a drive and it pulls and runs great. I believe new gas, new gaskets and new cracked hoses and it would be a good runner.

I'm sure all the slapping you are hearing is chain slap....I'm pretty sure all the guides are brittle and if not already broken they will here soon..chain most likely is rusty chain tensioner aswell..if you intend to fix it is replace those parts asap before more damage is done

I'm sure if I fix these small problems, it will run another 100k easy right?

I'm highly strongly suggesting REPLACING the entire timing components. I wouldn't fuck around and neglect those....if you know Kevin(gerta) id ask him aswell I'm sure he would tell you the same thing.

OK. I appreciate it. I guess I might just look into getting that stuff done. My main goal is to have a reliable daily driver.
