We went over the pass with no chains and probably 20% tread. Awd is over rated.

Ever think about an 06ish Civic Si 4door. I have an 06 Si coupe with newer tires and that thing clawed its way through the snow like a maniac.

Are e46 cars under 5k now? We have a 325xit for daily. I love it. Only big problem for me is its not very gutsy for the mpg it gets. Due to the underpowered 2.5. a 330xi would be fun tho.

I have a 325i also - it's my wife's DD. I was looking at the awd e46s but they go for a good percentage more.

Yea they tend to be a little more expensive than RWD 325. From you want described:

" and I can not have children in a convertible.
I need something that's good for the mountain, coast, hikes, snow, gravel, etc. I'd prefer a wagon but 4 doors are a must."

A 325xit seems perfect because it still has that BMW RWD feel with the safety factor in addition. I owned a 325xi before this 325xit wagon. If you ever get to the point of looking into one hold out for the wagon. So much more versatile. Too bad there isn't any 330xit in the US.

I thought I had seen a 325xit wagon floating around craig's for around 8K, few more than 5K... But In my a opinion a great car.

There are normal 330xi sedans, E46 AWDs are nice, but FFS the amount of front axles they throw is crazy sometimes. E46s also have dem leaky steering racks, which really isnt that big of an issue anyway.
