Dude, just don't do it. I have SP plates on my race car, and could if I wanted to drive it all over God's green earth, but I don't. Why? Because I am not out to abuse the system. Breaking the law is breaking the law, and in the end you are just ruining it for the rest of us..

Not trying to play all high and mighty, but I look at Special Vehicle/Collector plates as the DMV being nice to car collectors for once. Please don't abuse this system for those of us who also use it.

Seriously. It costs $48.75/yr in WA to register your heap. If you can't scrounge up 50 bucks at a time, you could have a little savings jar like my 4 year old and put 4 dollars a month in it. Then you can raid the couch cushions for the extra .75 when it's time to renew.

Aren't license fees per county? I'm pretty sure I just paid $120 here in King County, and they're trying to get it to go up another $60.

Of course, I'm pretty sure my old county only charged like $55 or so.

Edit: In no way should my question/comment be taken as justification or argument for running a plate on a car that does not meet the requirements of the law, or even the spirit of the law. Since not every road is a toll road, assumptions are made about a "regular use" vehicle, and the same fee is applied to everyone. If you own multiple cars that are only taken to shows a couple times a year, they have an alternate fee. Obviously the most fair system would be tolls on every road, but neither we nor the government wants to bother with such a system. If you use your vehicle on a daily or even weekly basis to carry your ass around town for different life activities, you should pay the regular fee.

Here in CT, any car over 20yrs old is eligible for "antique" plates. There is no restriction of usage it mileage, the older cars are simply taxed different. I've seen 1993 beater accords with these plates. The restrictions derive from "classic car insurance policies". These policies are usually restrictive as hell but dirt cheap. For example, my 76' 2002 costs me $118 per year with full coverage, taxes are $20 per year in my town.

I've never run front plates on any of my cars. This is over 29 years of driving and living in 5 different States (all "required" front plates, but CT was less of a dick about it than WA and CA). Even so, I've been ticketed once in all that time. So, please don't blame it on some stupid hipster thing. I drive mostly sports cars where a front plate generally looks like ass. Rear plates are not so bad.

I have no issues with collector plates out in Black Diamond but they are lax with that stuff. I got them since it made since for my 2002. Thankfully Black Diamond does not do emissions anyway.
