    flywheel machine/resurface/balance price?

went to Don's on Stark at the recommendation of this thread:

told them i wanted it machined (for my m50 swap), resurfaced and balanced. they said $175. does this seem high to anybody else? actually, the price for the resurface and machine work didn't seem too much, but the dude said $75 for just the balance. thoughts? i'm not opposed to having them do just the machining, and then taking it somewhere else to be balanced if that seems excessive to anybody else.

That does seem high. Last time I had one resurfaced it was $30 or $40, but that was a couple years ago. $75 for balancing might be about right.

I went to C's auto machine shop in hazeldell for my m30 flywheel
I have pictures if his work in my swap thread in my sig. It cost me I think $65 and that includes a bead blast too which was 25 or 35 bucks out of the total.

I brought a head to Dusty's Machine shop (on St. Johns) and got it decked, tanked, a few stubborn valves removed, and a broken stud extracted, all for $88. Might check them out.

/\ Dustys has my m50 head now, did a m20 flywheel resurface for me for 40$

what I like is the people you talk to there, are the actual machinists.

It's around 60-70 locally so i'd imagine that'd translate to ~80 on the west coast. Thanks economically depressed area!

Ok, so i picked up the flywheel today. here's the breakdown:

                  45 - resurface
60 - lighten (the machining down of the back)

then there is a separate receipt from Ed's Auto Parts (the Advance Auto Parts that is attached to Don's Machine Shop)

                  75 - balance flywheel.

so there we have it. the Don's Machine Shop cost doesn't seem unreasonable now. but 75 to balance a flywheel? yeah, that seems excessive.
