Moving to WA need living space

    Howdy guys,

So the GF and I are moving up to WA July 6th. I am going up a month early to scout out living locations and maybe some work.

Anyways I thought it wouldnt hurt to throw this up here and see if some one is renting something or knows of something for rent. The place we have lived at now for the past 4-5 years I found on the 2002 FAQ and its always fun to rent from other car people.

Anyways there are three of us, me the GF and our pug Dude who is 12. We are looking for something small thats not an apartment 1 bed/1 bath w/ garage or decent sized covered work space. I am a carpenter/builder and need room for tools and projects. We are looking to be some where from Everett to near Seattle.
I can do work on said house as part of the rent if wanted.

If anyone has some input or ideas let me know. This is a big move for us and anything helps!

    Cheers guys!

Congrats! You are going to find that prices are going up the closer you get to Seattle. Are you looking at Trullia or similar sites for housing?

Do you want to share a price range? You can measure the rent increase by the mile around here, radiating out pretty perfectly from downtown. There aren't many "fixer upper" neighbourhoods close to downtown Seattle. When going north, that dollar per mile rule starts to dissapear around Shoreline

That said, you mention Everett as a northern boundary, that's good! You may be able to dodge the ridiculous rents around Seattle. Shoreline for example wouldn't be a bad bet for a "good deal" on rent. What I don't know is how many one bedroom houses you're going to find there. Where I live in Loyal Heights the rent is borderline stupid, but all the houses are small 1920s-1950s houses with garages just big enough for an E30 :)
So while I pay more than I want for what I get, what I want is actually an option.

Rent in the neighborhoods north of downtown up to Shoreline area have also gone up about 30% in the last two years. I've rented 3 different places now in 3 years because the landlord keeps wanting to sell. I'm hoping I get to stay in my current place for another year, and hoping I can afford to :)

My knowledge of rent prices only goes as far north as Shoreline though. I know little about Everett.

edit: if you're really from the bay area as your profile says, the rent won't be too shocking.

Id suggest Vancouver. Janderson moved here and im assuming he likes it? Id maybe ask James, he knows a lot of people in the seatac are, and someone might be renting?

FWIW rent around the Seattle area is skyrocketing due to the new and quickly rising minimum wage. For example, a two bedroom 1 bath with garage in (ghetto) West Seattle are right about 2k a month, let alone somewhere you'd actually want to be. It's nearly cheaper to get a mortgage than to rent.

                  Are you fuckin' retarded?

You're suggesting shitty tax haven suburb of Portland which is over 150 miles away from where he's looking.

The increases in rent and property prices has nothing to do with the minimum wage going up.

Seattle is expensive and has been steadily increasing for 15+ years.

OP: Figure out where you are working and pick a location after you have that locked down, because commuting is a nightmare if you have to cut through seattle to get to the opposite end of puget sound.

Ill be returning from sacramento to my home town on june 6th, cool so see another transplant. Although I agree Vancouver as a whole isnt necessarily a great town to live in, the towns on the outskirts are pretty damn good, especially getting up into the sticks just a little, I've always been a personal fan of Camas, and getting out towards Heisson, past Battle Ground is also gorgeous.

As far as work goes, My father was a contractor working with solid surfaces for over 30 years, he made a very easy living in the vancouver/portland area, but lived only within commuting distance to the two areas. His good friend James has been kicking carpet for about 25, big ass dude, also had no problems doing soft surfaces in same area. I worked with my pops for about 5 years doing mostly custom Marble,Granite countertops, and lots of custom bathrooms, other shite.

When you break it down I'd much rather be stuck in portland traffic than Seattle traffic. Seattle can be equivalent to the traffic you find on 580/680 if that helps at all.

I know all you Seattleites hate on it but, Tacoma is pretty awesome and much cheaper than anything around Seattle. Less Assholes as well.

While my time in tacompton was brief, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
rough areas aside the smaller neighborhoods are excellent.

                          also cheap...

I'm with josh on this one. buy>rent

Shorelines rent is on the up swing too, been looking around at complexes and houses in north city area east of 99. Some deals pop up every now and then, though usually student housing deals.

I've been to plenty of r3v members houses, always impressed at the spots just north of I5/405 intersection.

Don't be silly. Of course property value has been increasing for decades, and rent will rise with it. Nothing is stagnant. Rent is rising beyond what it normally would due to minimum wage. Anyone can see that and should have seen it coming. It is simply supply and demand.
