emissions shop .. help my BMW

well i am trying to get my e30 registered ...

and i need to pass emissions ...

i have taken it twice .. once with a 153 ecu that had a chip and now a 173 ecu that is stock ...

my co2 level is ok through out ... but my hydrocarbon count is 700ish!!! at idle with the 173 ecu .. and was at 900 ish with the 153 ecu with a chip at idle ..

at idle it is failing ... but it passes at cruising speed ... .. what a bummer

.... i took it to a local specialty shop to try and get them to do some dignostics and tinker a bit .. so i they can give me a waiver

they gave me the car back and said they cant do anything with it

    so now im stuck .........

im going to continue to drive the car around to let the ecu settle in ... but i need a shop that will do some work at least so i can get a waiver ...

anyone know of a place that can help a bro out ... i just want a waiver so i can get it registered ............... ill keep it on the DL ... 8)

im just looking to pay to get a waiver and get it registered

    ------------------------

i would continue to tinker .. but i start classes again on monday and cant afford trading school time for car time

Auburn Foreign car can do it. Taken the e30 there before, as well as my dad's. They said it was the hoses and fixed them, still didn't pass but they can wave it. I dunno of any other places off hand in the seattle area.

it has a brand new cat ....

like i said i sent it to a shop ....

.... its an engine management problem .. obviously because of the drop of hydrocarbon levels when i changed the ecu ... and it isnt failing at any other part of the test except at idle ..

when i took it to a shop

the guy put in a stalll .. came back in talked to the counter guy ... walked back out ... pulled the car back out and to the door and handed the counter guy the keys and a paper

the guy at the counter said he couldnt do anything since ... the air intake was modified and the whole exhaust was modified ... ... AND had no O2 sensor

well .. i modified the exhaust ... it does have a brand new cat ... and it does have an o2 sensor that i put in ...

i was pushing him to check the wiring of the 02 because i wasnt sure if i did it right .... so he can bring me total up to 150 to get the waiver ..

          he wasnt having it .

i offered to give him 150 bucks and give me the waiver .. but he said no

.. i didnt have any more time .. so i headed to work ...

i have the waiver to drive it around tomorrow

          -------------------

ill check it out ... if not im taking it to a local technical school (clover park tech) and let one of my old instructors work on it ...

What did you mess with on the wiring? Did you take off the connector for the O2? Cuz it should just have its own connector and plug in only one way.
Auburn I think was a 150 to fix it or if its more than that they they'll just give a waiver, or atleast 3 years ago it was that way. I passed emissions for the 318 w/ an m50 so didn't take it in last time.

the only 02 sensor i had was the one on the previous car .. and that was hard lined in ... so i matched up the wiring like that one ..

plus the headers that i put in .. change the location of the o2 sensor

Take it to Bristow's on South tacoma way. Pete is a good friend/former employer of mine and always helps E30 owners out.

are they an emissions certified shop? ....

because i am mostly looking to getting wahtever if wrong to be fixed and also get a waiver so i can title the car asap!

                  ---------------------

right now the car is at clover park technical college and they are doing a little work

they are looking into possible leaks at tubing from the intake manifold or the pcv valve ...

                  -------------------------

if it doesn pass emissions after that ill probably take it to bristows if they can provide me with a waiver

well..mine didnt pass emissions..it was wayy over all the limits. like a ton over. they pulled me to the side..got on the phone with some super hero emission person..and told me that i cannot get it waived even though i spent the $150 that is required to get it waived, if it did not pass.

so waht did you do then?

that sounds a bit fishy? .. did you take the car to a shop that is emission certicified and is on the list on shops that they give u when u fail emissions testing

because if the shop is on the list and does work on your car, they cannot tell you no and have to waiver/bypass your vehicle from emissions ....

to me it sounds like u went to shop that does emissions repair but didnt take it to a shop that was state certified to do repairs ...

i registered it some place else..where emissions arent needed.

yes, i took it to a certified emissions shop. yeah they did..but it would cost 200 more bucks and i highly doubt it would have fixed it.

and once again, yes. i took it to the place the actual emission tester people recommended.

i know 100% that it is my cat. and i need a new o2 sensor. the cat is what made me fail.

believe me..i knew what i was doing. i wasnt going to spend 150 at a place that isnt on the sheet.

Sounds really fishy, and sounds like you needed to do homework as to why they won't let you, or your car just sucks and they didn't like it. I've had both a 87 325i that didn't pass, and were able to waive it, and a 91 318is that didn't pass, previous owner had to get it waive, and owner before that had to get it waived, and they still let me waive it w/ the $150.
