    Anybody in Pensacola?

E30 noobie looking for locals. Anybody around here? I have had plenty of VW's but got my first E30 today. Been doing research because the head has been removed by the PO and could use a little help. I could put a VW 8 valve together in half a day with no book but this is new to me. Anybody want to take me under their wing?

Thats what I was thinking due to weight to power ratio. Very nice!

Hey man. I saw your post today, and I had to sign up. I actually went and looked at that car before I ended up picking up my 1987 325is down near Orlando. What did you end up paying for it? It was $600 when I looked at it and I know he then listed it for $500 OBO. Anyways my engine runs, but it isn't drive able yet. I'm more than willing to help you work on yours, and you are more than willing to come down to Gulf Breeze and work on mine. I will be tearing it apart tomorrow to fix the issues keeping mine from being drive able.

Tell the truth now, haha. The motor broke the timing belt and destroyed the previous head. The PO purchased another head that needs to be installed. I was confident I could put the head on no problem though.

Killer!! I would def. like to come and take a look at the ride! I tried to get it for $350 but he said no. We settled on $425, I paid Tatums $60 to get it to my house and tipped the driver a 10 spot, so.......almost $500. I ordered the head set and head bolts from M&D today, they should be in Monday. Till then I will be port matching the intake/exhaust manifolds to the head and believe me, there is a LOT of room for improvment. I'll def. have to get pics of that. Today I was outside fixing the mangled seat frame. It had a mega gangsta' lean goin' on! It was trashed, but I am pretty good with the welder. I got it all straightened out but the fabric is still shot. Oh well, its got seat covers! Once I get the head on I gonna have to pony up for the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump I guess. Everybody here says the timing belt, water pump and thermostat are the first things to replace, and after seeing the condition of the distributor cap and rotor, I'm pretty sure that "general maintenance" was not on the PO's mind at all! I'm surprised that car ran at all with the way they looked. CHARRED!! Everything else looks good. Exhaust is still in pretty good shape, There are still crosshatches in the cylinder walls, so I figure that is still good. No play in the driveshaft, shift linkage is still tight. We'll see when I get it going though!

Oh, I also painted the valve cover black and gave it a little wax too. I know its not going to help it run right now, but it might as well look pretty sitting still.

Yeah I think that car was in better condition then mine minus the not running part, haha. I probably would have bought that one if it was $425 when I looked at it. I paid $800 for mine, and around $100 getting it home, but I am going Spec E30 racing with it so it was worth getting the 3.73 LSD. My drive shaft and shift linkage is shot.

I would much rather have a "nicer" car that needs mechanical work vs. a mechanically sound car that needs body work. Its mainly for the wife now till the jetta gets painted, then I will confiscate it! LOL!! How can you tell the gear ratio of the rear end? I was under it yesterday and couldnt see any markings on it. I did see a tag bolted to it but it appeared to have no stamping marks on it. The guy said he had 2 other guys willing to give him $425 so I RAN to the bank to get the cash, instantly call a tow truck and got it home. I bet some people were pissed about that but like I always say.....money talks!

Yeah money did talk. He gave me a similar story when I was looking at it for $600. I know mine because it is a 325is, but it should be on the tag your right. I haven't gotten very far yet, but my E30 Bentley manual did just come from Amazon. It is much better than the Haynes manual the car came with.

Sweet, I'll try to make it to get some ideas and hit some vendors. There will be vendors, right? Probably a good place to meet more locals too.
